Chief Technology Officer

Oversaw company-wide migration from legacy hybrid infrastructures to SaaS, PaaS and IaaS platforms in the Cloud. These initiatives approximately tripled available compute resources while reducing operating costs 35%. At same time I implemented new database technologies; new AI techniques; new clients on multiple platforms; enhanced test and release automation; and rearchitected core utilities to RESTful SOA. Highlights:- Migrated all databases, Web servers, build servers, AI compute clusters and software robots from hybrid onsite / colo / VPS systems to pure public cloud.- Migrated legacy old-school RDBMS environments to "Polyglot Persistence", a domain-specific data ecosystem built on NoSQL, Big Data and Elastic platforms including MongoDB, Neo4J, Hadoop, Hive, Pig, Elastic Map Reduce, PostgreSQL, CouchDB, Redis, ElastiCache and DynamoDB.- Migrated all business systems from on-premisses hardware to hosted or cloud-based solutions.- Implemented fully automated Continuous Deployment of all products and services.- Re-architected previously vertically-monolothic applications into RESTful SOA.- Implemented rules-based AI in Drools.- Currently writing talking Android and iOS clients for chatterbots and new games.- Wrote JQuery / HTML5 rich clients for TriadCity and new games.- Migrated legacy Ant-based build scripts on developers’ desktops to Maven / Jenkins / Artifactory in the cloud.- Migrated bug tracking to Jira.- Implemented Agile planning in Greenhopper.- Upgraded SCM from CVS to Git.TriadCity has more women players than men, is blind-friendly, and is taught in universities around the world as an emerging literary form. The *Cambridge Companion to Postmodernism* cites it as its culminating example of Postmodernist literature.

Oct 2012 - Nov 2014

Senior Director Of Enterprise Architecture

Epocrates

Led *Platform Services and Engineering Operations*, an umbrella of multiple teams encompassing much of the server side of Engineering, through a successful turnaround taking the company from an earlier business model to SaaS:- Platform Services designed and implemented the Service Oriented Architecture underlying the shift of business model. This was a fundamental architectural enabler implemented at a very aggressive pace. I built the group, which included the company's most senior developers, in a very short time, leading to on-time Beta and GA deliveries of the company's new flagship product; led the architecture design; designed and developed the initial suite of services; and implemented HIPAA-level security at the core of the architecture. - Release Engineering transitioned from legacy manual build & deploy processes to full automation across all products. Our vision of "release reform" emphasized a Continuous Deployment model taking continuous integration one step farther; and secure self-service deployments triggered at will by business owners.- PMO evolved from enablers of the waterfall to global problem-solvers spanning organizational boundaries. They led the company-wide migration to Agile; drove business process improvements; and intervened to streamline workflows throughout the company. Our goal was to build a comprehensive DevOps model minimizing organizational barriers.- Quality Engineering matured from ad hoc to structured testing of all products, including tight partnering with Platform Services and Release Engineering to ensure that the deliverables owned by those groups were test-automatable. Was additionally responsible for Engineering's Strategic Quality Initiative; chaired the Best Practices Working Group; and coordinated DevOps on behalf of Engineering.

In 2004, I was awarded the company's "Above and Beyond" special recognition award for work on FLEXnet Manager and other products. 2003 - 2005 ~2 yrs

Chief Technology Officer

SmartMonsters pioneers next-generation multiuser role-playing games, which I believe are an emerging form of literature. As CTO, I brought SmartMonsters' flagship product to market a full quarter ahead of schedule and 40% under budget.SmartMonsters' Java infrastructure is significant: over 15,000 classes in all. The flagship product, TriadCity, is an n-tier design in which Swing applet clients communicate with a cloud of highly-scalable all-Java servers. The approach combines the open source MINA networking framework with a cooperative server topology providing unlimited scalability, a key enabler of the potentially infinite virtual "world" it hosts. The code makes extensive use of design patterns such as the "Strategy" pattern for reliability, extensibility, and dynamic runtime flexibility. Considerable emphasis is placed on AI techniques including automatons with emergent behaviors; QA robots; and chatterbots. The application design emphasizes speed and robustness, and will easily accommodate thousands of concurrent players. The project is an artistic as well as technological success. TriadCity is cited by The Cambridge Companion to Postmodernism as its culminating example of Postmodernist literature.
