As an Operations Manager reporting to the Operations Director the main challenges were:• The production of 1.3 million tonnes of Ball Clay in a cost effective manner• To improve IMS performance i.e. health & safety, environmental & quality aspects of the various operations• To achieve mineral balance from the extraction sites & to minimise the amount of material tipped as “waste” from these sites• The interface with a major property project and ensuring a sustainable outcome for the Operations in this area.

Reporting to the Operations Director I was responsible for the following:1. The development & implementation of a Management Control & Reporting system in order to improve both operational and financial performance.2. Where operations were under performing to support Senior Management and facilitate systematic reviews of those operations. This involved the use of many techniques associated with Lean Manufacture and Continuous Improvement.3. To further reduce operating costs at the production sites and to improve communications through the supply chain, I developed and implemented a Forecasting and Planning System for the planning of our quarrying and processing operations.4. Additionaly, I was made responsible for the Transport Planning function within the company. This involved the day to day planning of a fleet of 25 LGV’s, delivering products from our production sites to customers throughout the UK.

I was responsible for the operations of Dingle Bank Quarry, Bent Farm Quarry and New Platt Wood Quarry, which have a combined output of 1.6 million tonnes of industrial silica sand. In this role, 21 members of staff and 41 hourly paid employees reported to me. I was actively involved in the development and implementation of Business Strategy that included capital investment, cost reduction programmes and the introduction of Quality and Environmental Systems.

As the Quarry Manager I was responsible for the face operations and primary crushing at Croft Quarry, a 3 million tonne per annum granite quarry. This involved the organisation of men, machinery and materials in order to feed the processing operations at the site. The main challenges were the sheer scale of the operation and to conduct the operations in a safe, economical and environmentally aware manner.Previously with ECC, I was a Quarry Production Trainee for 18 months before being promoted to Assistant Quarry Manager. As the Assistant Manager I was responsible for all processing operations. These included secondary & tertiary crushing, screening, coated materials, rail and lorry loading.

South Africa

During my 3 years in South Africa, I was based at Western Deep Levels Gold Mine and underwent a structured training programme. I gained “hands on” experience in all aspects of underground and surface operations on a large gold mine.
