About Mark Poll

Mark has over 20 years’ experience in tourism research and visitor management in natural and protected areas. Initially developed at university where he gained a PhD in visitor management in protected and natural areas, his skills have been advanced over more than 16 years of workplace implementation including time managing visitor research, planning and policy for the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service (TPWS), Tourism Tasmania and as a consultant. Mark has this extensive knowledge and experience of visitor management and planning in natural areas. His work has been recognised for making significant contributions to the management of recreation and natural protected areas by the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Committee and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In addition to managing public comment on management plans and strategies, as well as conducting program evaluation, Mark’s planning is complemented by his expertise in designing, conducting, analysing, and reporting on both qualitative and quantitative surveys.One focus of Mark’s visitor survey work has been to examine visitor behaviour and develop ways to manage visitor behaviour in natural areas to minimise impacts and maximise the quality of visitor experience. He also has experience in developing and testing new tourism experience products.Mark has designed and conducted surveys of specialist visitor groups for a range of organisations including the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service, Tourism Tasmania, Events Tasmania, South Australian Tourism Commission and the Kangaroo Island Futures Authority. Importantly, this work has directly shaped the development of practical visitor management strategies, management plans and tourism experiences.He has represented Tasmania on the Australia-wide Tourism Research Council and Tourism Access Working Group (Cruise-ship Research), and the Wellington Park Management Authority Research Advisory Group.
