Sports Sub-Editor

England, United Kingdom

Freelance Journalist

Current

London, United Kingdom

I am currently working as a freelance sub editor at The Times. I work in the sport and news departments, subbing stories for the print, online and tablet and smartphone apps. Responsibilities have included taking charge of the sport section of the tablet app and chief sub shifts on the tablet news desk, which involve revising and approving the work of other sub editors. I have also taken responsibility for the Irish sport section which is a mix of print and tablet subbing and building the Irish sport section of the website.

Content Manager

11Versus11 - Metro'S Football App

Kensington, London

I was Content Manager for 11versus11, a personalised football news app powered by Metro. Using artificial intelligence, the app provided each user with a different experience depending on which Premier League team or teams they had shown an interest in. My role involved curating the editorial content which appears in the app, which came from a wide range of sources including news wires, local and national newspapers and fan sites. My duties also included sending push notifications linking to specific articles to particular fan bases as well as posting stories on the app's Twitter and Facebook pages. I also got involved in live streaming betting tips with The Tipster from Metro and also made videos on a weekly basis which previewed the weekend's big games. On top of these duties, I also worked closely with Metro's sport desk about which stories will be used in the various digital editions, including writing, subbing, selecting photographs and embedding videos. Despite still being in its infancy, the app won the Best Lifestyle, Sports & Entertainment App at the European Digital Media Awards in Copenhagen. 11versus11 was also shortlisted for the Best App at the 2017 Online Media Awards – up against BBC News, invstr, The Independent, The Times and Upday. It was also nominated for News App of the Year at the newsawards 2017 alongside apps by Berlingske Business, The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Times and Upday.

Jul 2016 - Jul 2017

Sub Editor, Metro Digital Edition

Kensington, London

I originally started working for Metro on a freelance basis. My role involved working for the tablet and phone editions, using InDesign to convert the print edition into tablet and phone format. This involved layout and copy subbing of news, features, business and sport stories. It also included embedding links to audio and video clips and creating interactive games. After a successful trial, I was offered a maternity cover contract and was offered a staff contract as soon as the maternity contract expired. During this time I carved a niche by taking responsibility for the sport content in the tablet edition, working closely with the sport department to expand our coverage. I also worked on the newly-launched Metro Evening Edition, a digital-only product, which involved selecting news, features and sport stories from the wires, designing pages, writing and subbing copy and selecting pictures ready for a 5pm deadline. I also got involved in sending push notifications to readers and producing reports detailing the statistical performance of our editions.

Freelance Sub Editor

The Sun

London, United Kingdom

I worked as a freelance news sub editor at The Sun and The Sun On Sunday, editing copy and writing headlines for the most popular daily newspaper in the UK.

Aug 2013 - Aug 2015

Chief Sub Editor

Petts Wood

I joined News Shopper, a weekly regional newspaper covering south-east London and north Kent as a trainee sub editor. My duties included subbing news and feature pages across our six editions, as well as assisting with the sport and leisure sections.A year later, I was promoted to senior sub editor and later climbed the ladder to become deputy chief sub editor. My expanded role included managing the other sub editors and sport and leisure departments, liasing with the page planning department about editorial space and working closely with the news desk and editor on a daily basis. When the chief sub editor was made redundant, I became solely responsible for the subbing department, which was later recognised when my job title changed to chief sub editor.I was also in charge of sending the pages to print in the absence of the editor. As well as my usual day-to-day management and subbing duties, I was also given responsibility for training staff in how to sub, including trainee recruits and more senior members of staff joining the sport and leisure departments.I have more than eight years of experience of Quark and have used custom-built copy handling software such as qScribe and WordSmith.I also have experience of using photo processing software including Photoshop.I was also responsible for the newspaper’s photo archives and after the loss of our picture desk in 2008 came up with the idea for a basket system in which reporters store photos they have taken as well as submitted pictures. This bespoke system is still in use today.I have a reputation for being a hard-working and reliable member of the team who can raise a smile with a witty headline as well as a joke to maintain morale. I am known as someone who takes pride in my work and have never missed a day sick since starting at News Shopper all those years ago.
