Senior Managing Director Of Programs
In this role, I am responsible for the strategic direction and management of the organization’s work and staff in the areas of advocacy, policy, community engagement, education and communications.
Senior Director, Media & Communications
I joined the Sikh Coalition in 2014 as the Senior Director of Media and Communications. When I took the job, I was told that the U.S. media would not care about the Sikh American story, but today we average nearly 300 U.S. media hits per month. This credit goes to the talented team that I manage as we work to deepen the brand and use communications as a sharp tool for driving advocacy results and raising Sikh awareness. Responsibilities: - Manage high-level media relationships and develop strategies for sustained media success- Manage all communications collateral: Op-Eds, website, talking points, messaging guidance, press releases, email blasts, and social media - Manage multiple staff, fellows and interns working within our department- Develop and lead crisis responses - Manage communications plans aimed at shaping victories in our work to combat hate, prevent racial profiling, create safer schools, end employment discrimination, and raise Sikh awareness- Develop and implement new tools and strategies for engaging and growing email and social media audiences- Directly support fundraising content development, including drafting grant proposals- Manage media trainings for staff, clients, community leaders and other allied spokespeople - Develop the tools and resources to improve internal communicationPrior to joining The Sikh Coalition, I spent six years as a Managing Director at Rethink Media, where I led collaborative communications campaigns on behalf of leading civil rights organizations that were working to close Guantanamo, push for meaningful surveillance reform, and fight to hold our government accountable for torture and drone strikes. This work also focused on pushing back on the discriminatory policies and hate crimes directed at American Muslim, Arab, Sikh, and South Asian communities.
