About Mark Reno

With over 35 years of experience, Mark has been responsible for the planning, development, design and construction of over 160 transportation projects involving more than 240 bridges primarily throughout California and other western states. These projects have included new structures, rehabilitations, widenings, upgrades, emergency repairs and retrofits. Some of these projects have included highly complex structure modeling techniques as well as authoring project specific design criteria approved by Caltrans. Mark is a nationally recognized bridge engineer and project manager and serves on several national committees and boards. He has also authored several technical papers in various publications and journals.Mark was awarded the 2001 Arthur M. Wellington Prize by the American Society of Civil Engineers for his paper, “Section Properties for Latticed Members of San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge,” published in the Journal of Bridge Engineering, May 2000.

(2009-2015) In this capacity Mark served as chairman of the Transportation Research Board’s Structural Section. This committee is responsible for the promotion of technology transfer and the advancement of the practice of utilizing, designing, and researching steel bridges. This involved working closely with several other technical committees and reviewing technical papers that deal with all aspects of steel bridges for consideration of publication in the TRB record. This committee also solicits, develops, and prioritizes the research needs for steel bridges.• Member, Transportation Research Board Committee AFF50 - “Seismic Design of Bridges.” On this committee, Mark reviewed technical papers for publication in the TRB journal and organized various technical sessions at the annual TRB meeting. Mark was also responsible for the development of research statements for the committee.

    While working at Caltrans, Mark served as Structures Design Branch Chief and supervised a 20-member bridge design team. In addition, he was the Assistant Chairman of Caltrans’ Structural Steel Committee, a member of the Caltrans Earthquake Committee, and a member of the Post-Earthquake Investigation Team. Mark was also a Seismic Specialist, responsible for training and implementing the latest seismic bridge design developments in the Caltrans Office of Structures Design.At Caltrans, Mark was the Structures Project Manager for the retrofit projects on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Suspensions Spans, covering the projects from Treasure Island to the City of San Francisco. Caltrans received an award for these projects as the “Top Bridge Retrofit Project of the Last Decade” by the Applied Technology Council and the Structural Engineering Institute.Mark also served as a Project Senior where he was called upon to deliver complex bridge projects and was required to manage a team to deliver these projects throughout the State of California. He also delivered the PS&E on numerous projects involving replacement, rehabilitation, seismic retrofitting and widening of transportation structures throughout the State of California. Mark was part of a special Caltrans emergency response team that was sent out following significant earthquakes and was involved in the emergency response and follow-up inspection efforts following both the 1994 Northridge Earthquake and the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. Mark served as Bridge Representative in construction managing earthquake repair projects in the Bay Area. Mark also served a key role in the delivery of the replacement projects for structures at the I5/SR14 Interchange following Northridge and the I880/I80 Cypress Freeway Interchange following Loma Prieta.
