About Mark Rodgers

I sold my business in 2020 and am now on the loose. I have had a great career where I learnt software engineering and have been able to practise my craft in embedded systems, desktop, and data server environments. New Zealand is short of skilled people and I am happy to help on projects that need pushing along. I remain young at heart and can bind easily into a team.To me, software engineering is about design, and I practise the maxim that software development is 80% design and documentation, and 20% coding and debugging. I am expert in programming for Windows and can write in C++ and C#, or scripting languages like R and Python. I understand relational databases and can do both the physical design and query building. I like to be curious and am happy to learn new languages and frameworks.

    Mark 2 Software is my trading name for short run projects. Two interesting projects have been to enhance the firmware in a data logger, and write desktop software that shows photos from a web cam above a graph of the data collected at the camera site. The photos are animated and the graph highlights the time of the photo.

    My company wrote software to store and analyse environmental data such as rainfall, river level, irrigation use and water quality. The software is used by twelve of the sixteen Regional Councils, consulting engineers, and electricity generators Mercury, Genesis, and Meridian. I sold the business assets to Hill Laboratories and they continue to support and enhance the product line.The software modules were mainly for Windows Desktop but we also wrote an IIS Native Module that acts as a server. This is an interesting product because it serves data, images and statistics to a client. This means that the client can ask for large amounts of data to be analysed without drawing it across the Internet.

    Ericsson in Napier were finishing the development of digital pair gain system. This allowed two conversations over a single copper pair. I completed the embedded software in the exchange and remote units. This was an interesting project because the remote units were installed on telephone poles. The software had to be fault free because replacing a unit in the field was costly. I did develop software download but it was never used. I am proud to say that the installed software worked without the need for field upgrades.

    The Hydrology Centre was an R & D unit of the Ministry of Works and had 25 extraordinarily talented staff. I did instrumentation design, and software development for both embeded systems and desktop. I was given staff supervision responsibilities and was Marketing Manager for my last year in the company. Hydrology Centre became part of Niwa in 1992.

    I re-wrote software that let people design substation earthmats. My job was to validate and improve the model and then add enhancements such as isolation grids. This was a great project for a young engineer and I was later asked to transport the software off an IBM mainframe on to PDP/11 and IBM PC. The PC version was used by Transpower and its consultants for the following 14 years.
