Executive leader and strategist in communications, marketing and public affairs for non-profit organizations.Mark heads media relations for the American Veterinary Medical Association, which represents more than 105,000 member veterinarians in every US state and territory and 60+ countries. Before joining AVMA, he was an independent consultant providing communications, marketing and public affairs services to major educational institutions, healthcare systems, health professions organizations, foundations, theater companies, and other leading non-profits, including extensive COVID-19 communications support for NorthShore University HealthSystem (Endeavor Health). Recent communications awards include the PRNews Platinum Award for Crisis Management, the Publicity Club of Chicago's Golden and Silver Trumpets, and a Skyline Award and an Award of Excellence from PRSA/Chicago.Previously, Mark served as Associate Chancellor for Public Affairs at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) and its Hospital & Health Sciences System, which includes Illinois's major public hospital and the nation's largest College of Medicine, and as Vice President of Strategic Communications and External Relations at Columbia College Chicago. Under his leadership, UIC’s communications program won numerous awards of excellence from CASE, the International Association of Business Communicators, the Publicity Club of Chicago, and the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals. Before joining UIC, he was Interim Director of Public Relations at the Illinois Institute of Technology, a private multi-campus research university.A journalist before moving into public affairs and institutional communications, Mark was a supervising editor for the Associated Press in Washington, DC, and Chicago, and assignment manager for a Chicago television station. His journalism awards include two Emmys and the American Bar Association's Silver Gavel. Mark also is the author of 29 plays and many short stories, and a member of The Dramatists’ Guild. His plays and short stories have had productions, staged readings and publications in New York (City and suburbs), Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Michigan, NJ, and internationally in Brighton, UK, New Delhi, India, and Ottawa, Canada.Mark's volunteer work includes service on the boards of directors of Connections for the Homeless and Chicago Alliance for Playwrights, on the Most Livable City Association's leadership committee, as a social media consultant for Executive Service Corps, and as a reader for Recording for the Blind.
