Design subsystem for fusion reactor from concept thru installation on prototype.

Designed snap together injection molded plastic parts for high volume / low cost bath control module. Also designed 6-button injection molded plastic consumer interface bath control device. Performed all electro-mechanical packaging tasks, facilitated design reviews, ordered SLA rapid prototype parts, and assembled evaluation units.

Designed a pneumatic actuator lifting mechanism coupled to a megasonic cleaning apparatus that is used to clean the bottom side of a semiconductor wafer substrate; 2 patents pending. Designed a spray-jet cleaning device that accelerates and atomizes a cleaning fluid to removes particles from a semiconductor wafer substrate; 1 patent pending. Determined and eliminated the root cause of a manufacturing problem that had been plaguing a megasonic-cleaning product for more than a decade. Implemented and managed a transducer assembly dissection program to determine the root cause of units that failed during the manufacturing burn-in. The program revealed many manufacturing inconsistencies that were causing irregular product performance. The result was an increase in production yield and uniform product performance. Also delivered weekly PowerPoint presentations to the management team.

Increased annual revenue $14M by leading an international cross-functional product development team consisting of engineers, technicians, and machinists to design and manufacture a mid-range family of 6 telescopes including computer-controlled gearboxes with GO TO capability and automatic tracking. Led an internal product development team to design a family of entry-level telescopes consisting of 2 tripods, 2 telescopes, and both computerized and non-computerized mounts. Acted as vendor liaison between two competing offshore vendors to manufacture machined, injection molded, and die cast telescope components to cooperatively manufacture the complete turnkey system. Evaluated all aspects of product design and functionality. Determined root cause of quality issues, managed interim in-house corrective actions, and long-term vendor change processes. Managed the system debugging process culminating with final approval and orchestrated shipment schedules via air and sea transportation.

Implemented a cost reduction program by designing injection-molded plastic parts to replace more expensive machined parts that were used introduce the product to market quickly resulting in annual savings of $ 1.3 M. Designed a family of removable injection molded plastic loadpack parts and locking mechanisms, including the most complex injection molded plastic part in company history. Designed re-useable shipping restraints to secure the robotics in the largest tape library resulting in improved reliability, customer ease-of-use, and elimination of shipping damages.

Designed injection molded plastic disposable medical devices and created SLA prototypes to prove out functionality of designs. Added functionality and increased manufacturability of a blood cardioplegia console used to circulate, chill, and monitor the properties of human blood during open-heart surgery. Resolved manufacturing problems by designing tooling and fixtures to assemble disposable medical products in clean room environment.

Awarded a U.S patent for inventing an electro-mechanical mechanism that transports a data tape cartridge from one tape library to another. Created the concept and developed the entire design documentation package. Designed a waterproof 4-segment, 4-degree of freedom "stovepipe" type wrist joint and telescoping leg extension mechanism for a walking robot used in a nuclear power facility. Designed the stainless steel body weldment for a robot that cleans 60,000-gallon tubular vessels used to produce a food product, and led the electro-mechanical design team in defining the attachment of the 4 legs, 2 arms, lights, cameras, and on-board electronics.
