The role of General Manager Education Services encompasses a life long learning approach to general practice beginning with entry into the profession by several training and experience pathways through to ongoing CPD. Education Services comprises all aspects of education including fellowship pathways, education design and delivery, assessment development, exam delivery, governance, policies and analysis, accreditation and assurance and international domestic relationships. The charter is to deliver to provide excellent educational opportunities to in excess of twenty-six thousand current members and affiliates whilst ensuring that those opportunities benchmark positively in the domestic and international market. Recent changes to the Australian vocational training system and regulations concerning aspiring and continuing general practitioners will present both challenges and opportunites. Indeed a very exciting time to be involved in the design, growth and sustainability of the mainstay of our health system.

After 13 years as the inaugural Chief Executive Officer of the Victorian Metropolitan Alliance (VMA) I have moved roles. , an organization contracted by the Commonwealth government . As the first appointment of a consortium comprised of General Practice organisation’s and university departments of General Practice, my role focussed on the provision of post graduate vocational training and education for general practitioners in the Melbourne Metropolitan and Greater Geelong regions of Victoria. This entailed leading the company having responsibility for the creation and development of all management, curriculum, finance, governance and HRD systems, strategic planning and contract and quality management. With in excess of three hundred and fifty doctors in training across various programs and a budget in excess of twelve million dollars, the VMA has grown from its inception in 2001 to become one of the largest and most significant providers of general practice vocational training in Australia. The organization has diversified business operations and is fast becoming a major medical research and development entity with several external contracts including the Berwick Enhancement Centre, Doctor as Educator program and generic competence framework for Australian medical education. I feel particularly privileged to have led this organization from start-up to a major GP training organization.

Acting General Manager, Strategy, at Chisholm Institute - a Senior Executive Management position with responsibility for a division encompassing in excess of one hundred staff with an annual budget of 12 million dollars. The foremost priority of this role focused upon setting strategic directions and initiatives for Chisholm Institute and in identifying opportunities for the growth and development of its capability. The division of Strategy involved the areas of human resources, marketing, professional development, planning, policy and quality assurance, continuous improvement, educational research and innovation and educational support services.

Department Manager for Education Development Services. One of the major challenges of this position was the development of a single training department from the previous three amalgamated organizations and to engender a renewed and invigorated approach to building relationships and quality outcomes with both Institute and commercial clients. Implicit in this process was the responsibility to foster new initiatives in the areas of flexible and on-line learning and commercial services to industry and government organizations.
