Mark has over 25 years’ experience in Landscape Architecture, Environmental Management and Horticulture across Africa, the UK and Australia. He has served as a juror for the IFLA Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award in 2019-2022 and he believes that resilient cities thrive when urban and infrastructure projects are spatially designed to work with natural systems across scales. Based in Sydney, he also leads the International winning Square One team in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Milan to design cities as part of nature.He graduated from the University of Cape Town (UCT) Master of Landscape Architecture Programme with distinction after having received several academic scholarship awards. In addition, he earned the ILASA National Award for Best Thesis Project, as well as the ILASA-Cape Award for overall Academic Excellence. He has contributed to journal articles published both locally and internationally, and has also taught Construction, Plants and Design and Design Studio in the Landscape Architecture programme at UCT. Mark has maintained his connections to the universities by participating as an external examiner in the Landscape Architecture programmes at both UCT and the University of Pretoria. After completing a range of significant projects within other practices, including Green Point Park and the Cape Town Stadium Precinct for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Mark founded Square One Landscape Architects where he directs one of Africa’s leading Landscape Architecture teams to build better environments across South Africa and into Ethiopia, Uganda, Egypt, Malawi and Australia. His experience across various project typologies includes the planning, design, public facilitation and project management of urban development, education, tourism, cultural heritage, and rehabilitation and infrastructure projects. Mark is currently teaming up with visionary partners to drive a new era in city making by designing with infrastructure and natural systems to build flourishing cities.
