Nanocomp Technologies is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Huntsman Advanced Materials. I am still making Miralon, a unique carbon nanotube material used mostly by Aerospace. We are branching out into other applications such as heaters, conductive adhesives, anti-corrosion coatings, batteries and enhancing composites. While my job has not dramatically changes, the power of Huntsman has opened doors, and helped ensure the success of Miralon.

My efforts were central to the development of the processes for making carbon nanotube (CNT) yarns and sheets, as well as developing various products. The basic concepts of gas phase Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) of carbon nanotubes were developed into the commercial processes that are the state-of-the-art in large scale synthesis of the biggest, strongest and most electrically conductive CNT yarns and sheets in the world. The scale-up of this technology required a unique combination of fundamental physical chemistry principles and practical engineering. It is the scale-up technology that allows CNT materials to revolutionize the aerospace industry by replacing copper and other metals in space satellites and airplanes. The weight savings and performance enhancement from using CNT material is expected to affect not only the entire aerospace community, but also battery and other energy-related devises, electronics, energy transmission, heater and other thermal management systems, structural composites, and numerous other technologies.

Jun 2006 - Feb 2018

Applications Engineer, Process Engineer, Engineering Manager

Morgan Advanced Ceramics

Applications Engineering involved interfacing with customers to improve the performance and yield of Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) crucibles made of Pyrolytic Boron Nitride (PBN), and silicon wafer holders made of Silicon Carbide (SiC). As Process Engineer the CVD processes for both PBN and SiC were studied and modified to improve yield and product performance. The Engineering Manager role involved guiding process improvements and new product development as well as organizing the Engineering department around Six Sigma and ISO 9000 principles. A method was developed that reduced the cost of producing the material for the wafer holders (the company’s principle product) by 85% (Co-inventor on the patent).

Apr 2000 - Oct 2005

Independent Contractor/Consultant

Self

Emphasis was on energy efficient, sustainable housing using natural materials. I advised on the design and helped construct several straw bale and/or timber framed houses. Other more conventional designs were developed to make them more energy efficient.

Sep 1998 - Mar 2000

Home School Instructor

Self

Smithfield, Nc

My step-son had severe difficulties starting school, and had no ability to read at the end of first grade, and was diagnosed with dyslexia. After learning the Orton-Gillingham techniques for teaching dyslexics and taking over his schooling, he began to succeed. By the end of second grade he scored in the 96th percentile in reading comprehension on the standardized CAT test. By fifth grade he was successfully mainstreamed into public school. I consider this to be one of the greatest achievements of my academic career.

Jan 1993 - Nov 1997

Teaching/Research Associate

Durham, Nc

Research involved interfacing a Nd:YAG laser with a Step-Scan FTIR spectrometer to obtain the transient IR spectrum of cytochrome oxidase on various time scales. Teaching responsibilities involved the design and implementation of a new Physical Chemistry undergraduate experiment involving laser induced fluorescence of iodine, and teaching Inorganic Chemistry. As a Consultant to Nicolet Instruments, proof-of-principle experiments were completed involving the development of Step-Scan capability for the Nicolet 800 FTIR. As a Visiting Affiliate to Los Alamos National Laboratory the state of cytochome oxidase studies at Los Alamos were evaluated and strategies for improving the work at Duke University were developed.

Jul 1990 - Dec 1992

Teaching/Research Associate

Research involved fundamental studies of the origin of optical second harmonic generation from complex electrochemical systems. I taught Freshman Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry.

Aug 1988 - Jun 1990

Postdoctoral Associate

Argonne, Il

Research involved nonlinear spectroscopy of electrochemical corrosion. Optical Second Harmonic Generation was used to probe the passive layer on iron and nickel surfaces. Polycrystalline and single crystal samples were studied in ultra-high vacuum, air, or in situ in an electrochemical cell. A coherent Raman technique was developed for surface studies.
