After nearly 23 years of a very enjoyable career in retail, I now run a holiday home rental business with my wife.     Driftwood Stays is holiday home rental business, based on the South Coast. The properties have a relaxed coastal style that’s perfect for all the family; and it’s less than 200m to the beach! My wife and I set up, and now run Driftwood Stays together. We did the majority of the design and renovation work of the houses ourselves. We market the houses through our own website (www.driftwoodstays.co.uk), our social channels, and established 3rd party platforms (Airbnb, VRBO etc).

    Asked to add Brand to existing Retail responsibilities to bring focus and experience to a 30th anniversary update; brand and customer positioning had not been reviewed since 2010. The challenge was to modernise this iconic brand without alienating the core customer; following customer segmentation work, a refreshed target customer was derived with new brand positioning and re-branding. Marketing communications were also modernised; putting digital first to reach new audiences, by recruiting bloggers / influencers, whilst not losing site of the traditional (and profitable) methods, such as direct mail.

    Re-platformed and re-designed the website, including the implementation of a new integration hub and product inventory management system, which enabled improved cross-channel customer experiences, such as reserve and collect. Delivered strong growth, with sales +34% and profit +40%. Strengthened and simplified the retail strategy by educating and empowering stores to commercially trade their own business. With a diverse portfolio of c220 stores, ranging from airports to coastal towns to city centre, the previous uniform approach ('follow the guideline') under-delivered sales. Redesigned the reporting, taught the teams to interpret the data and encouraged them into greater autonomy to deliver their targets and brand values as appropriate for their own stores.Defined and rolled out new customer service standards; developed a new customer journey which captured and built on the best of the existing behaviour and then layered on more proactive 'selling' - sensitive to the brand values but effectively closing more sales. The improved conversion drove an additional £5m sales.

    By 2012, the business was recovering from 2010’s challenges, creating the opportunity to invest and grow the brand audience. Key task was to complete an ongoing branding project while maintaining successful e-commerce performance. Reported to CEO with a team of four. - Re-branded the business, updating the logo and typefaces across all customer facing assets (website, store fronts, product etc). Rolled out a new store design which was awarded the Retail Week Store Design of the Year - Reached new audiences with innovative marketing initiatives, including a 25-year anniversary campaign which contributed 330k new names to the active mailable database - Launched a re-designed website and additional cross-channel experiences. Sales grew by 77% to £30m and profit increased by 124%. E-commerce grew to become 15% of total business - During this period, group revenue grew by 23% to over £200m, and EBITDA by 63%.

    Promoted to the board by the new CEO, as HR Director, with a brief to re-organise the business (including a redundancy programme) and to reset the brand culture, requiring people and change management skills as well as brand knowledge. Shortly afterwards was asked to take on additional responsibility for e-commerce. The digital business was already established but required new leadership and a clear strategy to connect experiences across channels.- E-commerce sales in 2010 were £14m; targeted to grow the channel to £22m by 2014. Achieved £30m in that period and continued to deliver growth to £50m by 2017. In the first year of the new strategy, sales grew by 22%, both from the introduction of Order-in-Store and a focus on the shift to mobile devices, whist also laying the foundation for a full user experience project. Mapped out all the potential customer journeys, which has driven eight years of profitable growth.
