About Mark Simpson

I help charities make communications strategic and make strategy engaging. I can work with you to: Develop your brand, so you’re telling a clear, engaging story and achieving your goals. Engage your senior leadership team and trustee board. Develop strategy that’s rooted in the external world and the motivations of your audience. Audit your communications activity, set benchmarks, identify gaps, and create efficiencies. Develop creative services and content teams – bringing design, copy, film and photography together with marketing skills. Develop content strategy aligned to your strategic goals. Produce compelling content – copywriting, story development and messaging. Run competitive tender processes – finding external support to fit your budget, developing a tight brief, and engaging the right stakeholders. Develop PR strategy – from message development to crisis plans. Develop internal communications strategy to build employee engagement. About me: I’ve more than 20 years’ charity communications and marketing experience, mainly in nature restoration, but also covering animal welfare, international development, emotional support services, and arts and culture. My approach is rooted in the belief that every challenge is an opportunity. I've built my career by identifying those opportunities and driving change. I’m passionate about bringing out the potential within our people to be part of that change, by motivating them and harnessing their power. I’ve built large teams from scratch and worked extensively to build consensus at senior leadership and trustee level. I’m commercially minded – realistic about balancing the financial responsibility of charities with the commercial realities of the world in which we operate. Charities naturally separate the commercial from the cause, when it comes to communications. I can help align the two, so you can grow in a steady, sustainable way. I’ve led teams of up to twenty, covering creative, strategy and production, and working with audiences ranging from the hyper-local to national to global, often in organisations with complex structures that offer multiple services and products. I see my role as making things simple, but true to the cause. Please get in touch to see if I can bring a fresh perspective to your organisation. I’m always happy to have a free chat, with no obligation to take anything further.

I led on emergency communications throughout the lockdown periods. I also led the development and delivery of a short-term content plan aimed at keeping supporters engaged with our cause and our work during lockdown, which also provided nature-based content and home-learning materials to help our supporters.
