I started my working career as an agricultural fitter working on farms around Cambridgshire and Northamptonshire until I was made redundant in 1993.During my spare time I volunteered for various conservation organization including the Peterborough Conservation Volunteers as well as being a keen bird ringer so it seemed a natural move on redundancy to look to the RSPB for employment.My experience of livestock and arable farming, linked with my knowledge of tractors put me in a good position and I was offered a trainee wardens post at Strumpshaw Fen reserve in 1994.I have not looked back since.My main role now is looking after the management of the c1000ha of Berney Marshes and Breydon Water reserves whilst also developing relationships with local landowners so we can work together to create good quality breeding and wintering bird habitat both on and off the reserve.Due to my previous experience of machinery I also oversee the management of the RSPB Rotary Ditcher. This is the only machine of its kind in Europe and is used to quickly and efficiently put in wet features for wintering and wading birds on grasslands across the UK.In my personal life i an a very keen cyclist, competing regularly in local and national time trial events.
