I was a urologic oncology fellow at the NCI 1970-72. I developed an animal model for bladder cancer (BC) which identified the drug cisplatin as active in BC. Clinical studies followed it remains the most active drug for BC.I joined the faculty at the University of TN, Memphis and rose to the rank of Professor. I was awarded the Gold Cystoscope Award by the American Urological Association in 1984. This award is given to the urologist that has contributed most to the specialty within 10 years of completing their residency.I became Chair, Department of Urology at the University of Miami in 1991 and was Chair until 2010.I accepted the position of Chief, Urologic Oncology at Memorial Hospital in Hollywood, Fl in 2014.My research was primarily related to bladder and prostate cancer. I elucidated one of the causes for bladder tumor recurrences following initial treatment. I proved that cisplatin had a synergistic effect with radiation and this principle has become a guideline in the bladder preservation strategy for locally advanced bladder cancer.I popularized the periprostatic nerve block prior to the procedure of prostate biopsy . This is used in over 1 million men in the US annually.I was one of the first to utilize and promote the office based flexible cystoscope.I was an early advocate of active surveillance for low risk prostate cancer and published several articles advocating this approach. It is now increasingly standard for low grade low volume prostate cancer.I have advocated for intravesical therapy to reduce the recurrence rate for bladder cancer. This is an established part of all guidelines.I authored over 530 articles in peer reviewed publications.I was honored by The Society of Urologic Oncology to deliver the Whitmore Memorial Lecture in 2014. In 2015 I received the St Paul Medal from the British Association of Urologic Surgeons.
