The aim of my Ph.D. research was to test the hypothesis that the hydrological functioning of a large scale river basin - as conceptualized by runoff source contributions and mean residence times derived from tracer data - could be predicted from the average spatial characteristics of smaller contributing sub-catchments. This involved undertaking a systematic and extensive isotope-based tracer study of the 2,300 km2 catchment of the River Dee in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, in conjunction with a parallel GIS analysis.Weekly grab samples were collected at twelve locations over two hydrological years (October 2007 – September 2009) with specific objectives to (1) characterise the isotopic variability of the Dee catchment by assessing the input-output dynamics of ∂18O; (2) use alkalinity as a geochemical tracer to investigate the hydrology and tracer chemistry; (3) assess residence time and their controls with increasing scale.
