I am Sydney-born and raised but grew up in the USA 1959-61 and worked in Europe, 1978-80. After two years in Zurich, Switzerland, I returned to a country insulated by distance and time, lacking even a floated currency and ATMs, things already common in Western Europe. The need for Australia to express an identity on the world stage was apparent. The arts seemed to be an appropriate medium by which this could be achieved. Thus did I join the Australia Council, the Federal government's arts funding and policy advisory body, in 1983 and dedicate the next 11 years to the arts. I joined the Council as a Project Officer, Financial Advisory Division, brimming with enthusiasm. I finished as Senior Finance Officer, Performing Arts Unit. the Council's efficiency dividend for 1994.
