My journey through the inside of the penal system revealed deeply embedded apathies and negativities throughout the various strata of authority, and its legacies are failing our society. Most with a vested interest will not require an exhaustive list of those failings. I know many will have worked tirelessly to make inroads into what appears to be an immovable situation; they deserve praise and recognition.Reform requires critical mass. A credible force is necessary to draw the attention of politicians, media, social influencers and others in order to change the public perception of how those leaving prison should be managed for the benefit of society as a whole and then to change the mechanism. It is absolutely vital that the bigger picture is addressed otherwise a weak and politically duplicitous commitment to the sector will never reach its full potential and thousands of men and women will once again, become statistics of recidivism.I realise some may be cynical about changing the bigger picture, but honestly, I cannot accept the status quo and, more worryingly, the perpetuated trend typified by the mismanagement of the entire CJS under the previous government.My goal is to align and connect those organisations, individuals and resources currently functioning with insufficient cohesion, to influence attitudes and embedded conflictions in order to promote change. There are workable, viable concepts and solutions which can be achieved with dogmatism and determination as a product of this scale of coalition.
