They are a stable company with a reliable revenue stream, good technology, and an excellent fit between the skills I currently have and can provide them with compared to their internal software development and maintenance needs.The technology used is primarily Apache Netbeans as an IDE with a Vaadin-based user interface, boosted by a wide range of internal and external products and tools that Softcom uses for building and maintaining their products. As those technology choices are a key business delivery advantage of theirs, I'm not at liberty to discuss the details of the products and packages being used.I've been enjoying my relationship and my work with Softcom. I really like the people I've met, the owner of the company is very technical (which means the man making the decisions knows how the product suite works, having designed most of it originally), and it is a moderate-sized small and focused team that has a good ratio of specialties. Everyone is very skilled; the owner of the company has a knack for selecting technically astute people for the company and the team.My key skillset takeaway is working with the Vaadin framework, albeit a heavily customized internally-modified version rather than the current public release from Vaadin themselves. I'm working on an internal prototype using the current Vaadin-core facilities. Working with the existing mainframe application team, data centre support staff, and the vendor, our team implemented a solution which significantly reduced overall expenses, maintained system performance levels, and improved departmental charge-back accounting.My next project at JPMC was to analyse and prototype a set of complex month-end reports using Brio Enterprise web reporting tools. I was responsible for capacity planning, coordinating the installation and configuration of the Solaris upgrades, Sybase 11.0.2 server, HTTP (web) server, and Brio Enterprise server and client software. The final system freed a skilled business resource from a tedious task that had cost nearly two man- months per year.Other projects included support of time-critical financial messaging systems, enhancements to sub-ledgering financial systems, and technical infrastructure planning and support.Throughout my term at JPMC, I usually worked on 2-4 projects in parallel, prioritizing the efforts based on business requirements.
