Mark Sterling is an architect, urban designer and planner. Mark founded Acronym Urban Design and Planning in Toronto in 2014. Through Acronym, Mark continues to provide public and private sector clients with Urban Design, Land Use Planning and Expert Witness services at a variety of scales.Mark is an award winning architect, urban designer and planner who is known for his ability to lead and collaborate in multidisciplinary design and planning projects. His expertise in city building at multiple scales, combined with his ability to bring diverse groups of people together, make him a strong guide to the designers with whom he collaborates to build better communities.Currently Mark is leading major urban intensification projects in Toronto and Greater Toronto Area. He is the project lead and /or urban design lead for five new mixed use developments in downtown Toronto that include “tall buildings” ranging from 35 to 88 storeys in height. Mark is also the Director of the Masters in Urban Design program at the University of Toronto's John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design.He was a partner in Sweeny Sterling Finlayson &Co. Architects Inc. (2005-2014), Sterling Finlayson Architects (1996-2005) and was the Director of Architecture and Urban Design for the former City of Toronto (1995-6). Mark has been an adjunct member of what is now the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto since 1987. He has coordinated design studios at the undergraduate and gradulate levels and has been active as a thesis advisor.

Mark was a founding partner of Sweeny Sterling Finlayson & Co Architects (&Co for short). As a partner at &Co Mark led major intensification projects. He was the overall lead of the multidisciplinary consultant team for Toronto Community Housing’s Lawrence Heights Redevelopment Plan, a new 100-acre neighbourhood design that includes incremental rebuilding of existing social housing stock while rebalancing the transportation network for pedestrians, cyclists, and current and future transit facilities. For the towns of Markham and Newmarket, Mark led teams developing strategies to increase density around proposed transit corridors in response to Ontario’s Places to Grow legislation. On the West Don Lands Public Realm Plan, he was the urban design lead working with Waterfront Toronto to transform a previously underused 80-acre site into new public space that encourages active transportation. Toronto’s first proposed “woonerfs” or shared streets, a new urban form to the city of Toronto are a part of the West Don Lands Public Realm Plan.
