My industrial placement year was gratefully spent with the respiratory disease specialists at the Medicines Evaluation Unit (Wythenshawe Hospital) in a collaboratory laboratory with University Of Manchester staff. Alongside a wide range of communal responsibilities focused around cellular and microbiology, I was fortunate enough to be assigned an independent project. This project - investigating pharmacological modulation of respiratory inflamation - involved a wide range of techniques. Most notably cellular and molecular biology including (but not only): cell isolation and culture from primary tissue samples, RNA extraction, RT-PCR, qPCR, ELISA, and other associated protocols.As my project ran parallel to my regular responsibilities I developed planning and communication alongside the techniques I was regularly practising. I am proud to say I had my original contract term extended, and the entire placement year was a wholesome undertaking which has provided me with another firm foothold from which I can continue my scientific career.
