Noc Engineer, And Technical RecruiterGlow Networks Nov 2007 - Mar 2011Dallas, UsI started with Glow Networks as a Network Operations Center (NOC) Engineer working with the ATT U-Verse IPTV network monitoring systems. After that position ended I was offered the opportunity to be a technical recruiter. I had never done it before so, I was a little apprehensive at how well I would do.I decided to take a different approach than most recruiters had taken with me. They mostly asked, "Are you available? What's your rate?" before they knew who I was or, if I would fit the opening. That approach struck me as being unprofessional and rather ignorant, Before I called a candidate for an open position, I took the time to learn the technical terms and protocols on the resume and in the job description. Why would I ask about IP Networking if I didn't understand the OSI model or know the difference between a CCNA and a CCIE?I target highly qualified telecommunications and data communications experts for contract or permanent positions. Typical job candidates have a BSEE, MSEE or comparable degree, CCNP, CCIP or CCIE and at least 5 years experience. Our customers include all the major carriers and manufacturers such as Cisco, ALU, Ericsson and Genband. We also support optical network equipment manufacturers such as Infinera and Ciena. -
Network Operations EngineerAlcatel-Lucent Nov 2005 - Nov 2007Espoo, Southern Finland, FiNetwork Operations Center engineer. We performed Tier 1 & 2 support for several OC192 networks, after hours NOC for San Francisco Int'l Airport, supported the Atrium 5020 Wireless Soft Switch for domestic and Int'l customers. -
Sales EngineerThe Maynard Group 2004 - 2005Soquel, California, UsIn this position I designed solutions for customers using the NEAX 1000 and 2000 PBX and the NEC Electra Elite Key System. I also designed some structured cabling, local and long distance service plans for customers. I did a little business development, too.I assisted the sales reps with quote generation and helped them to prepare sales packages. Many times I would visit customer sites with the sales rep to answer questions from the IT guy. I also made the occasional service call.My manager and the company's owner was and is Dean Maynard. To this day I think very highly of him both as a man and as a telecommunications professional. He knows more about telephone systems, regardless of the technology used, than anyone I've every known. If you need a phone system, talk to Dean. -
Sales EngineerTelepacific Communications May 2000 - Jun 2004Los Angeles, Ca, UsI provided the reality check for sales reps in both the direct sales and the agent channel. I was the technical expert on the sales team, able to consult about T1 applications, PRI, voice and data, DSL. The customer and sales rep could then choose the best product to meet customer needs and the sales engineers could determine the best way to deliver the service the customer wanted. I conducted many site surveys and also performed several installations for customers when an interconnect company was not available. I also consulted with our agents on products and delivery.I also used to teach to other sales engineers about T1 technology and applications. I've always believed that if you understood the theory, you could also understand the application. I used to challenge new Sales Engineers with the statement: "You're being paid to be an engineer. Act like it." None of us were degreed engineers but all of us knew our technology and how to make it work for the customer.I had one of the best managers I've ever had, Vicki Finch. She was an excellent manager and really understood how to get the most out of her people. -
Sales RepStaples Communication Oct 1999 - May 2000I tried being a "for-real" sales rep. The idea was to sell PBX systems and long distance plans and make a lot of money off of those big commissions. This is where I learned that being a very good sales engineer does not automatically make you a good sales rep! I failed miserably. But, I also learned some of the most valuable lessons of my business career: 1. Nothing happens until somebody sells something.2. You have to be willing to take on some risk in order to earn the desired level of reward.3. Economics, not technology, drives business deals.4. Salesmen are money/quantity motivated; engineers are motivated by process and quality. A successful organization has to have both. The company has long since gone out of business.

Customer Service EngineerSunrise Telecom 1997 - 1998Fremont, Ca, UsThis was my first job after retiring from the Air Force. Sunrise made a very nice little hand-held T1 test set and it was my job to see to technical customer service requests and handle Return Material Authorizations for upgrades and maintenance to the test sets. I got to be something of an expert on T1 circuits and testing while I worked here. This was my first exposure to an international work-force. We had a lot of engineers from Taiwan and China and most of our assembly technicians were from Vietnam. One of the best jobs I had there was training the staff for ISO 9001 Certification. We had to work hard to overcome some real language barriers. -
Technical SergeantUsaf Mar 1977 - Apr 1997Randolph Afb, Tx, UsWhen I joined the Air Force, I couldn't tell a fuse from a firecracker. I went to Tech School at Keesler AFB, MS, then onto my first assignment in the UK. I ended up spending 20 years in the USAF, retired in 1997. My biggest leasson for the Air Force was to "Aim High," the Air Force Motto. If you shoot for the stars and miss, at least you'll hit the moon and know that you tried to do something. As far as experience goes:Telephone switching, microwave radios, tropospheric scatter, modulation and multiplexing, copper, fiber and satellites. I did all this stuff in both a fixed and a mobile environment. I served in Desert Storm but it was all over but the crying by the time I got there.I worked as a Technical Controller, Training Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO), Assistant Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge (NCOIC) and NCOIC of the Tech Control Facility. I retired as NCOIC of the Base Chapel, Moffett Field, CA.I think that my best manager was Major Art Haubold, the Base Public Affairs Officer at Onizuka Air Force Base, CA. He knew how to give subordinates an opportunity to succeed while holding them accountable for the project. It was a good career, about half of it spent overseas.
