Renewable Resources 483 - Waste Management and Utilization. A practitioner-driven course providing students with an understanding of the properties ofmany of the important wastes that are generated in our society along with their treatment,disposal or reuse options. The course introduced common environmental, regulatory,economic, social and logistical considerations to the management of myriad wastes, andpresented innovative case studies.

SYLVIS researches, recommends and implements beneficial management options for residuals generated by municipal and industrial processes. Residuals managed by SYLVIS include wastewater biosolids and effluent, pulp and paper mill residuals, industrial ashes, and drinking water treatment residuals. As an extension of beneficial management, we are aligned with base metal, coal and aggregate mines, large-scale agricultural operations, landfills, crown disposition holders, and tree farm licence holders. My responsibilities include developing opportunities for SYLVIS to assist residuals generators in Alberta to implement environmentally protective and cost effective management solutions.

As Senior Environmental Scientist and Acting Solution Team Leader, I oversaw a growing group of professionals focused on the technical aspects of residuals management. Residuals are "wastes" that have intrinsic value; our objective is to research, recommend and implement management options that maximize the value of these residuals. The technical aspects that our team worked on include conducting management option assessments, securing regulatory approval for the management of residuals, participating in ongoing policy, guideline and regulatory development on a regional to national scale across Canada; and applied research.
