My role was to manage the operational responsibility and the Health and Safety of the Grahamstown SPCA, including the management of all the on-site facilities and kennels, cattery and livestock areas. In addition, I managed the inspectorate function, which polices animal cruelty, the fully functional animal clinic and hospital, and project managed the re-build of the SPCA Society Facilities. In my time here I have, re-established community engagement, trust and support, reduced operating costs, brought in much needed funding, developed and implemented leading health and safety, reduced accidents and lost time incidents, supported the management committee in addressing financial issues, managed vehicle and maintenance issues, developed good working culture, empowered and trained staff and improved the overall standards and running of this failing SPCA.

My role involved providing farm event safety, safety advice and selling to farm business managers the benefits of and developing a safety culture specific for their business. I provided industry leading advice and wrote monthly for the Farm Business Publication advising its readers by giving practical relevant safety advice.

My role was to Manage and ensure the safety of the entire workforce throughout the organisation, including DVLA contract truck fleet of over 250 HIAB 12 tonne plus trucks. The biggest risk to our staff’s safety was assaults and as such, I spent time working with the police in investigations and in setting partnerships with particular forces to ensure the best safety for the staff whilst at work.
