Senior Scientist/Phd Research
As a PhD candidate in Pharmacology Toxicology, my primary responsibility has been to conduct independent research, produce high-quality data, and complete a dissertation. My thesis involves molecular mechanisms of neuroprotection using phytocannabinoids to inhibit neuroinflammatory responses and synaptic deficit after TBI-like injury. In addition to independent research, I was given a unique opportunity to work as a liaison with GW pharmaceuticals. In this role, I was able to submit new proposals while managing a number of funded projects directly related to my thesis. In addition to my research duties, I have been actively engaged in professional development by attending and participating in professional seminars and conferences. At these events, I have given many presentations on my research to academic and industry audiences while receiving various awards. I have been commended for my academic excellence and ability to translate complex scientific information. To give an idea of my motivation and desire to excel, I was asked to and accepted a position as a tutor for medical pharmacology, physiology and biochemistry for the past three years on top of research, committee, and mentoring duties. As part of my role, I also assist with the supervision and training of graduate/medical students, and participate in departmental and university activities and committees. One of these committees involved organizing and coordinating logistics, budgets, and marketing of a conference.
Medical Pharmacology Tutor (Phar 7601)
I have been able to help on an individual basis with material covered in the medical pharmacology class taught to second year medical students and graduate students in the medical school. Topics covered included: Basic review of Pharmacokinetics/Dynamics & Autonomics; Anticoagulants; Anti-Arrhythmic Drugs; Diuretics; Chemotherapeutics/antimicrobials; Anti-hypertensives; Drugs for Ischemia & Congestive Heart Failure; Antidepressants; Sedatives/Hypnotics/Anxiolytics; Drugs for Epilepsy; Anti-psychotics & Bipolar drugs; ADHD drugs/Stimulants; Drugs for Neurodegenerative diseases; Opioids; General & Local Anesthetics; Antifungals/Anti-helmintics/Anti-parasites; and Gastrointestinal Drugs.
Graduate Biochemistry Tutor (Bioc 7301)
In this position I was tasked with understanding and thoroughly explaining the biochemistry grounded in topics such as: Enzyme Kinetics, Specificity, & Regulation; Gluconeogensis; Lipid Biosynthesis & Catabolism; and Nitrogen Acquisition & Amino Acid Metabolism.
Clinical Research Coordinator
During my MPH, I worked as a clinical research coordinator. My primary responsibility was to assist with the planning, implementation, and management of a an early-phase project that looked at the neurocognitive outlook of patients undergoing TAVI procedures. This included tasks such as working with the PI to obtain IRB approval, developing study protocols and consent forms, recruiting and enrolling participants in the study, and managing study documents and data, including the collection and analysis of study data. For this work, I was the main point of contact and assisted with the development of research reports and presentations. In order for the team to work proficiently and efficiently, I planned and organized the training for the research staff. I take great pride in my ability to lead and train research staff, and I am always looking for ways to improve their skills and efficiency, which in return make our team stronger.
Sports Performance Coach
Facilitated the creation of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) prevention program. Tasked to work with clients who had previous ACL injury and needed to regain strength in lower extremities while increasing core stabilization and strength. This was viewed as a prevention strategy for future ACL injury. Furthermore, I worked with sports performance clients that did not have previous injury.
Biomechanics Teaching Assistant
For this position, I was required to know the basic principles taught in biomechanics (ERS 202). Through this experience, I learned to accurately assist students who were struggling to understand concepts taught by the instructor such as stress/strain forces, applying Newton’s laws to the body and bodily movements, and the principles of the stretch-shorten cycle. I was also responsible for demonstrating proper lab procedures and conveying information associated with protocol to accurately complete the tasks.
