My scientific mission is to ensure that the thousands of important chemicals that our society uses are safe to humans and the environment, and that we ensure their safety using relevant and reliable modern scientific test methods.I am a professor of metabolomics at the University of Birmingham, and co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Michabo Health Science Ltd, a consultancy business that designs and uses New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) for the safety assessment of chemicals.I have been privileged to work with outstanding scientists along my career path, starting with my PhD in Chemical Physics at the University of Birmingham, UK. Following nearly a decade at the University of California - Berkeley (chemistry) and then UC - Davis (environmental toxicology), I returned to the UK in 2003. Based at the University of Birmingham since then, I've built the Metabolomics & Systems Toxicology Laboratory, Phenome Centre Birmingham, and Birmingham Metabolomics Training Centre, all achieving success through the superb scientists I have worked with.More recently, motivated by the need to provide the chemical industry and regulators with industry-based solutions for chemical safety, I co-founded Michabo Health Science Ltd. with Professor John Colbourne. Working with our exceptional team, I believe we can help to accelerate the pace of chemical risk assessments of industry chemicals, biocides and chemicals in foods, all using non-animal testing methods, 'omics technologies and computational toxicology.
