When asked the “What do you do?” question, I usually reply “I’m a lobbyist”.Most people then look bemused and ask a supplementary question, “What’s a lobbyist?” In the US and quite a few other countries the role would be well understood but in the UK lobbying usually hits the headlines only if there’s been a scandal.My answer to the second question is “I help the worlds of politics and business understand one another”.That’s what I’ve been doing for over 20 years now as a commercial lobbyist and, since 2007, with my own company Cogitamus Limited.Having started my working life at the customer-facing end of the transport industry and then working in the trades union movement, I take a very practical view of what lobbying, public affairs and wider communications work are all about. They’re about achieving tangible outcomes for businesses, organisations and communities that enhance the public good through, for example, the creation of new infrastructure, the improvement of services, the generation of worthwhile employment and the ethical enhancement of shareholder value.Another question I’m asked is “What does Cogitamus mean?” The name was inspired by my studies of Classics at Birkbeck, University of London in my thirties along with my approach to business. The Latin word for “think” is the same as “plan”, so the verb for “we think” or “we plan” is “cogitamus”. I then added “do” to the strapline because we always get on and turn the thinking and planning into practical outcomes.
