Mr. Mark Walsten- BiographyMark Walsten is an retired Alderman (member of city council) for the City of Des Plaines, Il. a northwest suburb of Chicago of approximately 60,000 people. Mark is founder and past Chairman of DEEP GREEN (Des Plaines Environmental and Energy Program) Committee, a group of citizen volunteers dedicated to working on environmental education and community outreach projects. As Chairman he has been instrumental in initiating several successful programs. These include; coordinating ‘green movie’ nights at the local theater, implementing a new green custodial plan which converts all cleaning solutions in City owned buildings to zero VOC emissions, initiating the purchase of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles for the City’s fleet which reduces pollution by 80%, introducing and supporting the use of permeable pavement for the City’s alley reconstruction program that returns rain water to the aquifer and reduces area flooding, coordinating and promoting a “No Idle Zone” area at local railroad crossings, hosting a bi-annual computer and electronics recycling program for Des Plaines, as well as other northwest suburbs, and lobbying for support of Illinois House Bill 6660 (promoting wind turbine net metering alliance). Mr. Walsten serves as Chairman, Environmental Best Practices Committee of the Northwest Municipal Conference (NWMC), and past member of the Utility Regulation Committee (NWMC) which is working toward establishing guiding principles for the Illinois Smart Grid.Mark is owner of Green Logic Inc. in Des Plaines and is also a certified Home Energy Survey Professional (HESP) for the RESNET Home Energy Team. He is a former member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) appearing in movies and national commercials. He is a 23 year resident of Des Plaines and has served on the First Congregational Church property board, Commissioner on the Des Plaines Special Events Commission, formed the first Neighborhood Watch block captain group.
