Life is full of unexpected twists and turns and my IT Career reflects that. From learning how to code on a second hand computer to coding for a CAD system. From discovering a passion for writing to being a Technical Author writing technical and user guides for airport security and baggage handling systems. From supporting home PCs to becoming the EMEA technical guru for a major computer manufacturer and running my own team. From the frustrations of only being able to apply temp fixes to issues due to call loads as an IT support technician, to being the senior ITIL Problem Analyst matrix managing multiple teams to identify root causes and put permanent fixes in place.What is so wonderful about working in IT is that there is always something new to learn, a new experience to gain insight from. There is always another hill to climb and when you get to the top the sense of satisfaction that you did it makes it all worthwhile.And that makes me hungry for more. I thirst for more of those challenges and crave for more opportunities to learn something new. My appetite for new hills to climb has not become dulled over time.In all these twists and turns has been the human side of IT. The frantic mother whose little girl couldn’t complete a school project because her printer wouldn’t work – the follow up call of a shy young lady hesitantly saying thank you (with whispered prompting in the background) is a treasured memory. The couple who stood to lose their business because their PC had suffered a catastrophic crash, and getting it back up and running. Sitting down with the rest of the team to help our undergraduate with their 100 word essay on why they should be accepted for the company’s post graduate sponsorship scheme.And when I am not saving the world I refuse to grow up by making Airfix kits and painting toy soldiers. I love to cook and my roast lamb is to die for. My sister in law nearly killed me when her daughter asked why she could not cook roast lamb like that.
