Strategic advice on technology commercialisation and licensing in the life science sector
London, United Kingdom
From 2008-2017, I creatively developed divestment projects and spin-outs as part of three-person unit, based in GSK’s VC group (SR One) and established a programme developing revenues of millions of dollars plus royalty earn-outs, and creating dozens of employment positions, with CEO sponsorship and interest.Example deals include the following. • Initiated and led the divestment of a GSK capsule-based drug delivery technology to Pfizer / Capsugel (developed divestment concept, identified target companies, initiated discussions with CEO and senior management of Capsugel and managed deal negotiations and contract discussions to conclusion) • Licensed a specialised drug development technology (salt and polymorph screening) and divested a 10-person technology team to Catalent (co-led SR One’s first major technology out-licensing project - “Optiform”, for salt-screening - from inception to execution; identified opportunity, provided market analyses, structured arrangements and negotiated terms)• Established a CRO spin-out business from a Polish R&D group (created a 22-person business (PozLab, in Poznan, Poland) within 8 weeks, against a tight deadline; identified opportunity and gained internal support, led commercial discussions, established structure with the Poznan Medical University (co-owner) and spin-out team; managed all tax, finance and legal aspects)• Repurposed an abandoned technology as a “personalisable polypill” for personalised medicine / adherence improvement (millions of pounds in funding secured for hypertension studies including work on this approach with Cambridge University and King’s College)

From 2008-12, I was seconded on a part-time basis to SR One to create and to execute the spin-out program that is noted above. In addition, I led a major technology strategy initiative and conducted business development activities. Technology Strategy:• Pioneered and led personally the key activities to develop an over-arching 15-year technology strategy for formulation and manufacturing for GSK’s Pharmaceuticals division, which gained approval from R&D management, CEO and company Board, securing funding of hundreds of millions of dollars; led to a 100-person group being established• Conducted major analyses of technology market potential and prepared business cases for new technologies for R&D board members e.g. combination therapy approaches; personalised-medicine applications • Led business analysis and influenced senior stakeholders to help to establish the GSK spin-out programme (in SR One) Business Development and Alliance Management (1998-2008):• Led deal teams on royalty-bearing drug-delivery technology licence transactions, across a range of technologies (patch, inhaled, controlled-release, biological) • Negotiated and managed over 100 early-stage collaborations; managed alliances up to tens of millions of dollars in total cost, with major clinical programmes; led a strategic review of a major alliance portfolio, post-restructuring, and negotiated termination of programmes; • Advised on terms on 30 major compound licences and helped to established GSK in-licensing guidelines; conducted multiple site due diligence visits for compound licensing purposes
