Pardee Foundation GrantI study the mechanistic role of specific estrogen metabolizing enzymes in the development and promotion of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) with a focus on NSCLC in never smoking women.Accomplishments:• Leading a project on estrogen sensitivity in lung cancer using cell culture of self-made clonal cell lines and established cancer cell lines, resulting in $100k in funding• Established three stable cell lines from vector design and lentiviral transduction to antibiotic based clonal or FACS based polyclonal selection — using these cell lines to analyze the effects of target expression in phenotypic studies via cell-based assays• Performing Annexin V/7AAD cell staining for analysis of apoptosis using flow cytometry• Extensive handling and processing of human/patient blood and urine biological samples in support of several clinical trials • Prepared tissue microsomes from snap frozen murine lung and kidney tissue using ultracentrifugation

Accomplishments:• Led project on mechanism of apoptosis sensitization in epithelial cells, using adenoviral expression system developed in direct collaboration with other lab members — resulting in peer-reviewed first author publications • Regularly conveyed research results in team meetings and seminars • Presented well received poster and seminar at Experimental Biology 2017 conference to experts in the fields of epithelial biology, mucosal immunology, cell junctions• Collaborated on multiple early draft manuscripts• Introduced to the lab a cell fractionation protocol to measure movement of mitochondrial proteins into cytoplasm, resulting in additional quantitative verification of study results required for publication• Routinely cultured epithelial cell monolayers on Transwell permeable supports for measurement of transepithelial electrical resistance and subsequent protein isolation, adenoviral transduction, inhibitor studies

Following one year of lab rotations, I joined the lab of Dr. Asma Nusrat and established my thesis project at Emory University. Since Dr. Nusrat moved her lab to the University of Michigan following accepting a position there, I moved to Ann Arbor in 2015 in order to remain a member of the Nusrat Lab and complete my graduate work.
