About Mark Ziffer

My current research focus is on using the coherence of NV spin qubits as a noise sensor to study magnetic fluctuations in materials. I have a diverse research background in quantum sensing, semiconductor optics and materials science. I am driven by finding new ways to apply my skills and new questions to tackle in areas of research in quantum science and condensed matter physics.

  • Columbia University
Associate Research Scientist, Department Of Physics
Columbia University Sep 2021 - Present
    New York City Metropolitan Area
I use quantum sensing with NV centers in diamond to study magnetic phases of 2D condensed matter systems. Specifically, I use coherent NV spin manipulation techniques to study the decoherence of NV spin qubits in the presentence of fluctuating magnetic phases in 2D magnetic materials (see here for recent work: https://arxiv.org/abs/2407.05614). I am excited about pursuing new directions in spin qubit sensing and control.

    Doe Eere Postdoctoral Fellow
Columbia University In The City Of New York Jul 2018 - Sep 2021
    Greater New York City Area
My research focused on studying semiconductor photophysics (electron-phonon coupling, non-equilibrium electron dynamics) using ultrafast and non-linear laser spectroscopy techniques.
  • University Of Washington
    Doctoral Student
University Of Washington Sep 2012 - Jun 2018
My PhD research focused on studying exciton photophysics and charge carrier recombination dynamics in organic and hybrid perovskite semiconductors for optoelectronic device technologies using electro-optical modulation spectroscopy, time resolved optical spectroscopy, and optoelectronic device spectroscopy. I used electric-field modulation spectroscopy to determine the room temperature binding energy of Wannier excitons in hybrid perovskite semiconductors by analyzing the electro-optical response with numerical simulations. I used time resolved optical spectroscopies (time resolved photoluminescence) and optoelectronic device spectroscopy (electroluminescence and photocurrent spectroscopy) to correlate charge carrier dynamics with optoelectronic device efficiency limits in polymer:small molecule organic semiconductor blends. I used electric-field modulation spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy to correlate structural order of polymer semiconductor thin films with exciton delocalization and oscillator strength. I designed, built, and maintained numerous automated set ups for optoelectronic device characterization (LEDs, photovoltaics) in user facilities at University of Washington.
