About Markalain Déry, Do, Mph, Facoi
As an infectious disease specialist and epidemiologist, I have been at the forefront of far-reaching disasters, viral outbreaks and social change both in south Louisiana and around the world. I have focused most of my career on HIV/AIDS, following in my father’s footsteps (one of the first HIV/AIDS doctors during the 1980s). During the pandemic, my work extended to the city of New Orleans, providing weekly updates to the mayor. I have been a medical responder to global catastrophes such as Hurricane Katrina, the 2010 Haiti earthquake and worked as a clinical field epidemiologist for the World Health Organization during the 2014-15 Ebola virus epidemic in Sierra Leone. In 2022, I responded to the war effort in Ukraine with the Swiss Foundation by providing trauma training services and psychological support to healthcare workers affected by the conflict.Aside from my clinical professional I am a strong advocate for health equity through social justice. My professional and personal background collide in extraordinary ways through WHIV-FM and NoiseFilter - learn more below.
