Being brought up during the boom of the Age of Information, the internet has been a core part of my life ever since I first heard the crackling bleeps and bloops from our dial-up modem. Never before has the world been so well connected; with the tools to communicate, build, and learn available at the touch of a button. Yet with so much power and potential, many don't realise just how important the internet truly is.I developed my first website when I was 14 years old, written using classic HTML and CSS as part of my Computer Science class at school. From then on I knew I wanted to start a career in Software Development. I studied Software Engineering (BEng) at Edinburgh Napier University in 2015, graduating with a First Class with Honours in 2019. During my time at university, I had exposure to a wide range of languages and technologies. I built a 2D Video Game Engine from scratch using c++, developed a hotel booking system with .Net Core and SQL, designed remote control robots with an Arduino Microcontroller, and even helped teach a few classes in Web & Mobile Development. These experiences helped me land my first contract job, developing a booking system for The Hairy Coo in 2019 using JavaScript and SQL. The application was rudimental as a first attempt, but it taught me valuable lessons in project planning and scope as well as dealing with client expectations first-hand.I landed my first full-time role as an Applications Developer at Aviagen UK, working in the R&D Department. I spent an enormous amount of my time learning the core fundamentals of network communication and data structuring. I developed applications that worked with low-level hardware (RS232) as well as Android applications that interfaced with Bluetooth Classic and Low Energy. However, my biggest achievement was the creation of a data management web application that helped us transport huge quantities of data across the business. This was a first for the company - saving them hundreds of man-hours a day.The creation of the data management application taught me people still don't fully understand the role the internet plays in our lives. That's the issue I hope to help solve as I grow and further my career as a developer, to educate and inform people on the impact the internet can have on their business. I became CTO at OMNIUX to help embolden this vision of a rich, interconnected world. Where companies can understand and benefit from our collective knowledge to help plan, build, and deploy their business in the digital space with efficiency, transparency, and dependability.
