Every company I have worked at or consulted with, I always become the data expert everyone goes to with any data questions. I just love working with data. Pulling it out of operational systems or wherever it resides, running audits to see how well fields are populated, determining the quality of the data, and running query after query to figure it all out. How useful is it? Can it be used to solve particular problems? What’s missing? What can be enhanced? What do we need to do to put this data in the hands of the people who need it most? Can we build data products to gain a competitive advantage? I like working with business users or leaders who know what the problem is that needs solved and which ones will have the greatest impact to the company’s bottom line. I build bridges between the business needs and the data. Once I have a good understanding of the data and how a company wants to utilize it, I can determine how to design the analytics environment and how to build the team around it. How complex is the data? Does it warrant experienced analysts or newbies? How data-savvy are the business users? Do they need a lot of hand-holding or would a self-serve environment suffice? I always strive to raise the Data IQ of the company as a whole. To be the Data Evangelist.
