Initium was a classic early stage VC firm working with advanced technology in software, semiconductors, life sciences, and renewable energy, primarily. Based in Arizona until relocating to the Bay area, we worked globally.

GWIN was a global network (like an early LI) with a virtual incubator I founded and was later joined by my late friend Russell Borland, Phd, who retired from Microsoft in 1997. Originally spun off from my consulting firm, GWIN (Global Web Interactive Network) was recognized as a pioneer in knowledge systems, creating and operating multiple market leaders from inception, including the world's leading small business learning network and later a learning/social network for global thought leaders. The latter, GWIN Pro, was like the grandfather to LinkedIn, but based from rural northern Arizona! We had an amazingly high quality network. Full boards of F500 companies, editors from all leading business and economic publications, professors from over 200 universities, many top tier VCs, CEOs in many industries, analysts, and even AF 1. Quite an experience. I built our datacenter from scratch and operated solo on site and further developed after working with a remote team to develop initial network.I began training in software development in 1996 and network engineering in 1997, becoming lead for remote team of specialists in 1998. I became proficient in object oriented programming and several languages, then progressed to more advanced search and data analytics. I operated the network 24x7x365 for several years at much higher performance levels than majority of leading universities, government agencies, and global 2000 represented in GWIN Pro. We received security threats daily from their networks, yet only once sent one their way from our network--a minor virus that slipped through.

HSI was a busy consulting firm covering the western U.S., relocating to the SW during the S&L clean up from the Seattle area. While I performed regional and national formal marketing strategy and M&A work to include global leaders, the bulk of our assignments typically involved a team to include specialists in audits of communities, educational institutions, lodging facilities, businesses, and real estate. An exceptional learning opportunity in one of the most difficult market environments in U.S. history within micro economies throughout the U.S. SW. Among dozens of other projects, I identified acquisitions for out of state investors that resulted in 10x ROI (without leverage-- extremely rare) within a decade.

Based in Tacoma and working at the Tacoma Dome Hotel, which was a Quality Inn franchise at the time, I worked closely with owner Gene Ferryman in his hotel portfolio to optimize revenue, operations and value. Gene acquired the Tacoma Dome Hotel out of bankruptcy. During this year turn around contract we increased revenue by about 50%, created a large net profit for the first time since the hotel was built, and more than doubled the value of the hotel. I sourced other potential acquisitions for Gene including the Wenatchee Center Hotel, which we bid on but was acquired by West Coast Hotels.

I was hired to take over the group sales effort in the turn around of the oldest lodging chain in the Pacific Northwest. The new owners hired a seasoned pro in franchising to start and expand Nendel's franchising. I also took over marketing for a few months in-between marketing directors. During the year period the company launched a one-hour free long distance phone program, dramatically increased room sales through groups and consumer segments, and became the fastest growing lodging chain in the U.S. Before deciding not to renew my contract I sourced, negotiated and closed a large company-wide rooms contract with Boeing that significantly helped set the stage for a small IPO the following year.

My wife and I acquired a historic doctors' dormitory in downtown Leavenworth, WA at the corner of 9th st. and waterfront park. We converted the building to a licensed hotel and restaurant, creating one of the first B&Bs in WA. Profitable from the first month, the inn became famous with returning guests from as far away as Germany, Japan, and South Africa. Listed in Best Places, PNW Magazine and many others. I was asked to write the final chapter in the book 'Welcome to Washington B&B', which created demand for a consulting firm - initially in hospitality, we expanded into all sectors. We expanded the inn to a full-service hotel with additional room, northwest gallery and gift shop, and indoor/outdoor cafe. I was elected to the board of the chamber of commerce at age 22 and chair of village promotions, which raised and managed a marketing budget for the town as well as hosted international cultural exchanges.
