My primary research interest at Colorado State University has been optimization of the energy efficiency in heterogeneous high-performance computing (HPC) systems and data centers. This primarily involves modeling of: the performance and power of compute servers, their associated workloads, and the power/thermal relationships of the cooling system. After modeling, resource management optimization algorithms are designed for: (1) energy and thermal efficient distribution of the workload, (2) intelligent selection of server performance states, and (3) management of the cooling system. Last, custom simulators are designed to test and compare resource management techniques (typically in C++). In summary, my research interests to this point have been primarily in the- Modeling of the power/performance tradeoffs of various processor states to assist in energy efficient resource management of compute servers.- Modeling of data center air flow and heat recirculation using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software.- Design of resource management heuristic algorithms to control workload distribution and performance states of servers/compute nodes with energy efficiency in mind.- Writing custom resource allocation simulators in C++, in combination with parallel programming libraries such as MPI and OpenMP, for execution on a Cray Supercomputer.
