McQ develops a wide variety of sensor products. Sensor products are typically wireless, consist of custom-built hardware/software, and report back to custom-built backend systems. I was fortunate to launch my career at McQ, as it gave me exposure to the majority of hardware, software, sensor, and wireless technologies on the market and allowed me to participate in and lead the development of countless products from concept to delivery. As an engineering manager at McQ, I managed 7 product development programs (concept through delivery). All projects came in on budget, on schedule, and met customer requirements. The role included developing the initial development plan with schedule and cost estimates; tracking team progress and budget; tasking personnel; conducting employee performance reviews; interfacing with customers, subcontractors, and management; leading the preparation and execution of formal design reviews; and overseeing the design, implementation, testing, and delivery of the system. I typically worked on multiple programs concurrently as well as functioning as the lead architect/engineer as discussed below.

As a lead architect/engineer at McQ, I performed the system-level design and led all development on 11 product development programs (concept through delivery). For each product development program, I was responsible for the following: First, I would conduct market studies to understand customer needs, then conceptualize a system design to meet those needs and define associated system requirements. Next, I would develop a detailed system architecture and interface control documentation to guide the developers during implementation. Finally, I oversaw and contributed to all implementation/testing/production. Additionally, I led all internal and customer design reviews (PDR, CDR, etc.) and owned all engineering processes and configuration management throughout each program. I was also responsible for things like FCC certification, internal ISO audits, and authoring technical publications and proposals for new customer contracts. iScout® and rScene® (shown below) are examples of McQ's products I conceptualized and led the development of while at McQ, each of which revolutionized their market segment by having ~1/8th the size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C) of competing products while achieving equivalent or better performance.

During my 10 years at McQ, I designed and implemented hardware and software on countless wireless sensor R&D and product development projects. Designs included analog signal conditioning electronics; digital signal processing algorithms on FPGA, DSP, and MCUs; communication devices such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and a variety of other UHF radios; GPS modules; power supplies for battery-powered operation; ruggedized mechanical packaging for outdoor deployment in harsh environments; and a variety of sensors including microphones, magnetometers, geophones, accelerometers, passive infrared, pressure, and gyroscopes. I developed software applications running on embedded systems for data acquisition, signal processing, and command/control. I also conceptualized and implemented sensor detection and power management algorithms as well as developed PC applications for data analysis and simulation. I frequently initiated the development of tools to improve quality and efficiency during development, test, and production processes. Assisted in the recruitment of design engineers. I also authored many technical publications along the way, some of which are listed here on my LinkedIn profile.

As an intern, I carried out the design and production of several new test fixtures. In the first two weeks, I built from scratch a test fixture capable of testing all the cables we manufacture. Next, I was tasked with building two fairly complex motor test stations. By completing these projects on my own during the short three-month internship, I was able to exceed expectations and received a full-time job offer from Danaher.

Although interns at GE Aviation are rarely given design work, I created a software design that resolved a critical overheating issue on the CF34-8D, E, and C engines by designing software that determines the plane’s flight status based on barometric pressure. Initiated a process improvement that saved GE 1/4 Million dollars a year. I conceived and executed a Six Sigma Green Belt project by developing a software tool which reduced the time required to access technical information by 90%. This resulted in a projected annual savings for just our team of $250,000! Also authored FAA certification test plans and test reports. Performed system integration bench testing on latest software versions.

Worked with a team to convert a Ford Explorer into a hybrid electric vehicle. I worked on the design of the power control system.

During this internship, my primary responsibility was the production output of Land Rover’s Oval EGR Cooler. I hit the ground running by increasing production output by 300% in just the first month of employment! I achieved this by redesigning the production tools and assembly procedures, as well as resolving several problems with suppliers. Other notable accomplishments:* Learned to weld and braze the coolers during the plant’s annual maintenance shutdown in order to meet Land Rover’s deadline. * Ensured assembly line procedures met QS 9000 and ISO 9001 requirements. * Repaired welding, printing, and testing robots on the assembly line as needed.At the end of the internship, I was offered a subsequent internship and tuition assistance at a nearby school (Cambridge or Oxford) if I continued working part-time. I decided to return to my home in the U.S.; however, I was provided the following letter of recommendation.
