Established Enstars’ Data Strategy and was principal architect for a new cloud hosted Strategic Data Platform (Microsoft Azure SQL MI, Qlik Replicate and Compose and Microsoft PowerApps). Supported IT development of key business, regulatory and financial reporting as well as Citizen IT workspaces used for business developed reporting and advanced analytics.Developed capability models for policy, claim and reinsurance value streams. During his time at Enstar Mark has been working in a multifaceted role, both as the lead architect for a large change program and (given his prior experience of Hadoop) as the lead architect for the Global Data Hub solution. Following a short proof of concept (PoC) Mark produced the detailed designs for this new big data platform including those describing its application architecture, infrastructure and security.Referred to as the Global Data Hub the solution includes:• Cloudera Enterprise Data Hub 5.10 (26 nodes spanning three environments)• Attunity Replicate 5.5 - to copy data from policy and claim systems into Hadoop• Informatica Big Data Manager (BDM) 10.2 - as a Hive on Spark code generator (smoothing the transition for internal SSIS developers to the new platform)• Trifacta Wrangler Enterprise - allowing authorised business users to analysis, prepare and perform data mashups (develop their own data marts) • Arcadia Data - dash boarding and rich visualisation tool that works natively with Hadoop Initially the platform provided ETL and MI capabilities. This was quickly extended to include enterprise search (using Solr) accessing via HttpFS web services. In addition, Mark has worked with the Risk Analytics team, completed a two month trial, and has now deployed Cloudera's Data Science Workbench (CDSW). Building on the success of the Global Data Hub this capability is in the process of developing advanced analytics solutions e.g. claim prediction, processing semi-structured datasets, using external datasets to inform decision making, and so on. It is very much focused on delivering an IT capability to the technical business users - the ability to script and build data products.The Global Data Hub includes environments deployed on premise, private cloud, and Azure.

Mark heads the architecture function for the GDPR program. From an IT perspective this has resulted in:- Introducing a new data retention and information lifecycle management solution- Deploying a Data Protection Management System (DPMS) to record business processes, business assets, perform and document process and IT risk assessments, and support vendor / third party / data processor assessments.- Working closely with the Information Security team to consider additional controls, monitoring, and revise non-production working practices.As part of this work Mark is looking to define the Groups Data Management Strategy and align with the Groups Information Security strategy and roadmap.

In the first 18 months - 2 years Mark was the lead architect on a program of work call Nova. These models support the sharing of data between the GoldTier client on-boarding (COB, KYC, AML), MS Dynamics (CRM), Charles River portfolio management and multiple accounting systems handling complex instruments (FX, FX options, forwards, futures, swaps) and money movements. The logical model was documented in Sparx EA in UML (class diagrams), which was also used to generate XML schemas. A change and governance process was established to agree and communicate any modifications once the models had been published.

Having conducted an initial health check Mark developed the strategy, target architecture and roadmap. Leading a team of DW & BI architects, including those from third party suppliers (Accenture and Moore Stephens), Mark was responsible for the database, application and infrastructure architecture including ETL, data models, data quality, reconciliation, presentation, visualisation and hardware. Mark also ran the EI Architecture Group where key design decisions were discussed and agreed. As Information Architect on the £100m+ Springboard IT change programme Mark led the design of a Canonical Data Model used to standardise messages and help facilitate a flexible services architecture. He also helped establish XML/message model design, messaging principles and a governance process.Mark was also responsible for architecting QBE’s Data Quality Framework which included establishing a governance process, defining metrics, monitoring / reporting, and tool selection / deployment of Data Flux.
