I'm a data scientist who has spent most of my professional career using data to solve human problems in a consultative chief technologist (CIO) role. I'm also a lifelong coder and learner with a nose for emerging technologies that show promise.I led a small nonprofit and large crowd-sourced project to create a 25,000 element digital taxonomy for US GAAP accounting rules known as XBRL, now required for all public company SEC financial disclosures. Since then, I've been in a consulting data scientist role, helping institutions (Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Council on Foundations, AARP, Society for Human Resource Management) shape strategies, design and build solutions for acquiring, curating, analyzing, and visualizing data to gain business insight. These experiences led me to the conclusion that the sudden abundance and availability of data of unprecedented size and in unprecedented numbers wasn't having the impact I expected. Having devoted a career to addressing infrastructure, data models, and interface design as factors that limit the performance of data assets, I came to the realization that data utilization and benefits are limited by education, and the low rate of data literacy among the general population, across all domains.I've been thinking about this for a long time, and am very happy to get a chance to define the future a little bit, one more time, by addressing this limiting factor.Specialties: technology and data strategyData science, statistics, and data journalism Machine learning and natural language processingOpen source, open government, and market transparencyData standards and standards governanceNon-profit management and public-private partnershipsReference data and master data managementEnterprise and solution architecture Education, research and innovation

Data Science Program LeadMontgomery College May 2017 - PresentMontgomery County, Md, UsI'm helping launch a newly established data science program at a two-year college that, when I attended many years ago, changed my life and launched my career. The Data Science program is aimed at providing math and statistics underpinnings for data analysis and problem solving skills, in addition to data acquisition, munging, curation, coding and modeling.Unlike many similar programs, it is designed to accommodate students of all disciplines, technical and non-technical. The rising demand for data literate and data proficient employees - whether marketers, managers, business analysts, bean counters, scientists or systems analysts - continues to grow in the region, and we hope to have impact in meeting that demand. My vision is an audacious one: to make Montgomery County, Maryland the most data literate place on the planet by educating data-driven professionals, higher-skill, higher-paid middle-tier data technologists, and data literate citizens and consumers. -

Founder And ModeratorNonprofit Technology Best Practices Study Group Apr 1989 - Dec 2006The Best Practices Study Group is an informal assembly of 20-30 chief technologists and executives (those responsible for IT and/or web strategy and infrastructure) at non-profits and associations in the region. The Study Group meets 8 times a year as a colloquium over lunch on the last Thursday of every month but July-Aug and Nov-Dec because of vacations and holidays. Mid-December is the traditional planning meeting in which a theme for the following year is observed. In 2004, for example, it is knowledge management. The year often includes one or two site visits, typically in the summer, and occasionally a social event. The core activity, however, is the exchange of information and knowledge at the "last Thursday" lunches, which are distinguished by two consistently enforced characteristics: (a) the meeting goes from 11:30am to 1pm - and not a MINUTE longer, and (b) no pitches or "infomercials" are permitted in guest presentations.
