About Mark Bryson

Update: After being laid-off after a company merger, I am now working a contract position at Coca-Cola Consolidated here in Charlotte. I want to thank my good friends Emily and John at INSPYR Solutions for getting me in the door for this position. The contract runs out at the beginning of the year, so hopefully somethings pops up at Coke or more industry positions come open in the first quarter. Exciting time indeed!!Here is my winding career story . . .After college, I went into the engineering field doing projects with programmable logic controllers. It was very hands on, and I got to get my hands dirty installing and debugging different systems. However, it was not a stable industry (laid off 4 times in 7 years) and sometimes you had to work holidays and weekends. So I decided to try something different, and a friend of mine passed my resume around in an up and coming group at a large bank. After interviewing with someone with an engineering background like myself, I started on a 20+ adventure in a large corporation. Started out helping with a loan system in Visual Basic 6 and a Sybase database, and ended up with another loan system in Visual Basic DotNET and SQL server. In between, there were challenges of portfolio mergers and acquisitions, interfacing with numerous internal systems and just trying to keep the lights on. So I found a new challenge 6 years ago at Healthstat as a database developer, focused on upgrading their DTS packages to SSIS packages and being introduced to their Snowflake database environment. I really enjoyed my time there and hoped to make a home there. Unfortunately, Healthstat was bought out by Everside Health, who was then bought out by Marathon Health. They laid off the legacy IT staff without even meeting them and finding out what they could offer to the new company. Very disappointing, but it gives me another chance to find something that fits me . . .

Listed skills include Access, Databases, Quality Assurance, Unix, and 7 others.

Sql Developer

Charlotte, Nc, Us

Currently working on re-pointing SSIS packages from SQL server to Snowflake and creating the appropriate Snowflake stored procedures in DBT.

Database Developer

Charlotte, Nc, Us

So I have been at Healthstat as a database developer since 2018. I started out upgrading DTS packages to SSIS packages and working on their ETL experience. I have now been exposed to data warehouse concepts and Azure. Now with Healthstat's merger with Everside Health in late 2020, I am learning new tools such as Snowflake and Matillion. Now Everside is merging with Marathon Health, and I have been told there is no position for me in the combined company. Time to start looking for a position elsewhere . . .

Nov 2018 - Jun 2024

Senior Applications Developer

San Francisco, California, Us

My latest and longest foray in the corporate world!! I have been supporting the Asset Based Lending group 14 years and counting. Currently working on reworking and adding new accounting rules for the data that our loan system send to general ledger. Very high profile and very intense!! Thankfully, I am working in a AGILE Scrum team (developer/ business analysts/quality assurance testers), which gives all of the parties involved a forum to communicate and a plan to work from. Past projects included multiple merger/portfolio conversions (too many to count) as well as converting the main loan system from Visual Basic 6 sequential code running against SQL server 2000 to Visual Basic DotNET object oriented code running against SQL 2014. Learned a lot about OOP, CLR, SSIS and SSRS in that project!! I also learned about many different build and deployment tools including TFS, Jenkins and uDeploy. I have been nicknamed Sherlock Holmes by my team, since I have a knack for finding bugs quickly and getting them fixed, regardless of whether it is a data issue or code issue. Maybe I need to get a houndstooth hat . . .

Apr 2004 - May 2018

Applications Developer

Wachovia Bank, Na

My first job in the corporate world (with a tie and everything)!! Supported the Loan Syndications group for 7 years. I was immediately involved with a system conversion involving Loan Syndicator, which involved a VB6 application running against a Sybase database. Years later, another system conversion!! This time it was with Loan IQ, which involved trying to tie in a vendor system with all of the internal bank interfaces!! I had to write SQL code against a DB2 database and transform the results into different formats for all of the other systems (including Crystal Reports). I met and worked with quite an array of people, including front office, back office, system architects, DBAs, project managers, QA testers, and other developers. Overall a very good introduction to how the banking industry works . . .

Jul 1997 - Apr 2004

Project Engineer

Various Engineering Firms

Engineering was my first career out of college. I worked for multiple small firms that designed electrical control systems based upon Allen Bradley and Siemens programmable logic controllers. I did a lot of things that today's project manager do, such as panel design, field I/O layout, procurement of materials, supervision of construction and installation, field testing and debugging of systems, training of maintenance personnel, and writing operations manuals. I also got to do some Visual Basic programming for Windows and NT-based data collection systems and some PC hardware activity including serial protocols and cabling as well as network protocols and cabling. The fun projects I worked on included design and implementation of an automated guided vehicle (AGV) and material handling systems for both 600lb polyester bales and wooden TV cabinets. I really loved the work, but unfortunately work dried up when the manufacturing companies I was supporting were closing up shop.
