Mark Carlin Work Experience Details
  • Suse
Programme Director - Rancher Acquisition (It Integration)
    Suse Sep 2020 - Present
SUSE agreed to acquire the Rancher Kubernetes business for a reported $600M+. Mark joined the SUSE team to lead the IT workstream to deliver this acquisition. This included a full review of the Rancher stack (90+ applications), alignment with SUSE and the subsequent fold-in activities. Rancher was a highly successful start-up which had grown quickly - partly enabled through a low level of corporate processes. Integrating this into the more mature SUSE model was a challenge across the People, Process and Technology. The successful delivery required a flexible approach to programme leadership - whilst applying structure always being ready to change the approach where sensible.

Following this achievement I led the Post divestiture IT separation and migration – delivering in 16 months (2 months early) ensuring that Micro Focus could focus on future ambitions and SUSE operate with full independence.Key Achievements:• Rapidly structured and recruited team that had the ability to meet the challenging timescale• Focussed team on clarifying the problem (over 300 applications jointly used by MF and SUSE, with numerous & complex legal entities), and created a set of principles to contain scope and enable the deal to close on time• Created a model and set of metrics to enable clear communication across all workstreams• Formed a culture of trust across a multi-disciplinary team across geographies, and delivered what was seen by many as impossible in the timescale• After 7 months core changes to the stack were implemented, data segregated (meeting SOX and GDPR requirements) and testing complete. SUSE was able to operate as a separate entity, enabling deal closure.• Formed a strong working relationship with SUSE C Level team to enable the full separation and migration of the SUSE business to the SUSE Stack within 16 months. • Migration included over 300 applications, including Workday, O365, Oracle EBS, SAP, Siebel and Pivotal.• Successfully managed a complex set of Transition Service Agreements (TSAs) to conclusion.
