In 2000/2001 I was responsible for design, delivery management and performance monitoring for European and pan-European virtual ISP (Internet service provider). This included specifying technical requirements and co-ordinating service implementation with the in-country network provider, BT subsidiary/Joint Venture partner, co-contractors, suppliers and the customer, plus management of an Oracle database for RADIUS running on Sun/Solaris. Other project responsibilities included: network and firewall design/implementation for on-line gaming (including project/budget/team management), fast Internet access over satellite, consultancy/RADIUS implementation for a new broadband service for Cable & Wireless Guernsey, requirements capture and network implementation for BT’s internal data centre migration/consolidation throughout Europe.

Initially my main project was design/planning of the introduction of unified messaging in the VIAG Interkom network, in respect of which I was responsible for co-ordinating between mobile voice network/voicemail platform and Internet planning and implementation functions as well as product marketing. In addition, I wrote requests for information/quotation and engaged in detailed negotiation with suppliers. Later I also took responsibility for the core network server farm providing DNS (domain name service), mail and news transit, RADIUS (dial access control system) and usage-based billing and reporting infrastructure for a range of Internet products. During this time I developed significant database skills (Oracle) and my Unix skills were also used to good effect. I worked closely with the operations team based in Frankfurt and communicated with them mostly in German. I was the prime contact on the network side for billing, sales and marketing for RADIUS, usage-based billing, OSS interface and other server-related matters.
Internet transport research specialising in multicast exploitation and control protocols for Internet multimedia. I was a member of a team widely acknowledged as leading increased awareness in BT of the combined threat and opportunity as a result of the potential of the Internet to become a multi-service network.
