Technical lead for the Digital Displacement embedded controllers, including embedded software, FPGA firmware and python test software.

I led Danfoss' embedded software development centre of excellence in the UK, with teams working in off-highway and industrial hydraulics with Digital Displacement and on-highway battery inverters with Editron.

I was responsible for the development and release of all production controller hardware and software for Danfoss Digital Displacement© pumps and motors, mainly the DPC12 controller for the DDP096 pump in off-highway and industrial applications.I overway both the software and hardware elements of the controllers with a team of engineers working on design and development, qualification testing, internal support and customer support.

My work at Artemis focused for several years on development of control systems for Digital Displacement© Technology hydraulic machines. This work contributed to a wide range of applications of the technology, including the SeaAngel 7MW hydraulic wind turbine project, as well as projects in the industrial, automotive, marine, oil and gas and rail sectors. Each individual application focused on increasing the efficiency of the systems, to reduce energy consumption and improve reliability in existing applications.My primary role was development of machine control software in C++ for ARM Cortex-M4, Xilinx Zynq and Xilinx MicroBlaze processors in a low-level FreeRTOS-based environment. The controller is responsible for actuating high-speed solenoid valves at specific machine shaft angles to control the flow of hydraulic fluid in the machine.A significant part of my work was helping to lead the design of an embedded controller for a mobile hydraulic pump, principally for the forklift and excavator markets, in partnership with a major hydraulic manufacturing company. The project involved specification, development and testing of production C++ code and design, testing and verification of production electronic hardware to meet the demanding requirements of mobile machines.In the course of supporting all of Artemis’ applications, I work alongside the other engineering teams in Artemis, as well as working directly with partner companies to integrate our technology into their vehicles and systems.I also had responsibility for overseeing the work of other engineers in the Embedded Systems team.

I worked on various projects within the Embedded Software team supporting the development of Digital Displacement© Technology, including being involved in the design and development of digital and power electronics circuitry for high-speed solenoid valves, PCB layout of micro-controller motherboards and multi-channel output driver boards, principle responsibility for FPGA design and testing as well as embedded software development.

Honours project titled “Demonstration of Next Generation Communications Architecture of DDTs in Offshore Wind Turbines”.Worked full time developing a real-time Ethernet-based communications system for use between an embedded microcontroller and Xilinx FPGA devices. Included system specification, high-level HDL design and testing, PCB design and testing and full-system testing and evaluation.

One of the team responsible for the day to day operation, maintenance and security of theChurch’s public properties, plus support of other owned buildings. This included preparing forinternal and external events and working with building users.

Responsible for the preparation, set-up, rigging, operation and take down of sound, lighting andprojection systems in live music, theatrical and corporate environments. Prepared technicalequipment for hire, including testing and maintenance. Evaluated and commissioned newequipment.

Worked on a number of projects during summer placement focusing on FPGA control systems fornovel hydraulic transmissions. High-level HDL design and testing, PCB design and integrationinto existing designs and development of machine diagnostic systems was undertaken.
