Hed Kandi
I unfortunately do not think the box is big enough. Quickly - I worked at jazzfm creating their compilations, I talked them into letting me release my own selections. I came up with the name, discovered the artist who drew the iconic images & compiled them. i also asked for a 1-5am graveyard shift radio slot so I could promote it. Shortly after we began events & the rest is history. I launched two other series Stereo Sushi & Acid Lounge. While at hedkandi we had 2 top 1o tracks & two in the 40. The idea was always to be a cool boutique label & not over exploit the brand. Unfortunately GMG decide to buy jazzfm and hed kandi went with it So the person that created it, ran it for 4 years at a huge profit was not to be trusted. GMG dutifully went out & purchased themselves a record exec. he was paid more than me, racked up bills in excess of 1m in the first year on his on projects and of course hed kandi came under pressure to make up the shortfall. The last 6 months of my time were hell I had to argue for every point & defend many of my staff, In the end I I agreed an exit strategy with the boss, I had no contract since GMG took over & probably should of walked out, However is was still my baby, I offered to stay another 4 months, complete 3 compilations for them and not go into business for at least 3 months. leaving them the summer to restaff. The day I left I was told I would not get my bonus, they were going to sue me for breach of contract and I would also be issued with a injunction to stop us releasing the new album ...In my time at Hed Kandi I created over 200 compilations,, performed all over the world, made jazzfm an awful lot of money (we put the entire company in profit for the first time in 10 years.Won awards, and signed 3 top ten records. GMG tried to gentrify Fierce Angel & that killed it.It was quite simply a unique product that everyone loved.. and me I left with nothing ...and a rather huge court case.
