The Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory has developed a brilliant Network of ASU Sustainability Scientists and Scholars who are driven to accelerate the pace of discovery in the field of sustainability. The members of this Network integrate practical experience with knowledge and action drawn from the spectrum of disciplines in the natural and social sciences, medicine, engineering, mathematics, humanities and the arts. They leverage their own substantial expertise together with the tools and experience of transdisciplinary research institutes, centers, facilities and experts across Arizona State University and through partner organizations to generate new ideas and solve problems.

Mark leads Tierra's Sustainability and ESG Advisory Services practice. He provides utility, industrial, commercial, and government agency clients with an array of sustainability and climate change services, ranging from sustainability strategy to GHG emissions inventories and verifications, technical studies, climate action plans, and roadmaps. He creates integrated decarbonization strategies and partnerships to achieve transformational goals. He develops web-based energy tools, market transformation studies, and GHG mitigation analyses. He helps clients create ESG strategies, programs, and roadmaps to drive clients toward aggressive, transformational GHG mitigation and adaptation. He evaluates, measures, and verifies demand-side management (DSM) and distributed resources (DR) strategies and programs for utilities and regulatory bodies.

Mark implemented impactful energy efficiency, renewable energy, and carbon reduction strategies. He led the development of CARB GHG emissions verification and California AB 802 / BESO energy benchmarking and assessment service lines for the company. He participated in the evaluation, measurement, and verification of utility energy efficiency programs across the Southwest. He serves as an executive sustainability consultant for higher education and school district clients in Ontario, Canada, and is also developing a unique community engagement strategy to facilitate rapid transition to the low-carbon economy.

Mark provided energy, sustainability, and decarbonization consulting services to a broad range of public and corporate clients, including Arizona State University, Ameresco, Mohawk College, Ottawa French Catholic School Board, Georgian College, and the Municipality of Middlesex Centre. Mark served as a sustainability and energy thought leader due to his extensive business and technical experience in energy, climate change mitigation, and sustainability consulting.

Mark served as Ameresco’s first chief sustainability executive. He defined corporate sustainability goals and implemented the strategies, systems, tools, policies, programs, and procedures to achieve them. He developed Ameresco’s first GHG Emissions Inventory and published its first Corporate Sustainability Report. He led 71 professionals in three global, matrixed teams to develop a Corporate Sustainability Plan, a Carbon Handprint project database, and a climate neutrality consulting service offering for the MUSH market sector. His team provided new business development and sustainability consulting services, responded to over 150 requests for proposals, and helped developers win $45 million of business. He delivered technical studies including Climate Neutrality Roadmaps, Net Zero Energy/Carbon Studies, GHG Emissions Inventories, and Renewable Energy and Carbon Offset Project Studies. He trained internal and client professionals for LEED and CEM accreditation exams.

Mark led a strategic alliance with Arizona State University (ASU), Rocky Mountain Institute, and National Renewable Energy Laboratory to provide expert sustainability consulting intended to drive ASU to climate neutrality by 2035. His team developed a comprehensive Climate Neutrality Roadmap to reach ASU's goals at a lower net present cost than the Business-As-Usual scenario. The process required a deep understanding of all four campuses, including the operations of 438 buildings across 23 million square feet of built space, a CHP and three central plants, 25 MW of on-site photovoltaics, and a large thermal energy storage system. Mark leveraged this experience to provide business development support and training across Ameresco and deliver sustainability consulting services to other clients.

Mark leveraged his technical and business expertise to support Green Ideas and help targeted clients achieve more sustainable design, construction and operations.

Mark co-founded this professional services sustainability consultancy to provide energy management, project management, energy modeling, commissioning, sustainability consulting, and training to a wide range of clients. Company revenues reached $2 million annually and supported a staff of 26 before the Great Recession. His primary responsibilities included team development, strategic planning, business strategy, business development, sustainability consulting, and project management. He led and mentored 20 project managers and engineers. He was directly involved with 80 certified LEED projects, representing 38 MSF of built space, two-thirds of which earned LEED Gold- or Platinum-level certification. Mark's leadership positioned Green Ideas to become one of the first firms worldwide to be designated as a LEED Proven Provider by Green Business Certification, Inc. He helped develop 41 MW of photovoltaic systems at client sites. He provided sustainable design, construction, and operations training to over 6,000 industry professionals. Mark addressed international audiences as a thought-leader on green building, sustainability, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and climate change solutions, technology, and strategy. His team's projects and services were delivered to clients from over 20 countries.

While at Green Ideas Mark worked with other industry leaders to establish the Arizona Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council as the third chapter in the country. He co-chaired the USGBC West Region Council and chaired the Arizona USGBC Chapter. He was the Host Committee Chairman of the Greenbuild 2009 Conference and Expo, where he led a team of 1,000 volunteers to facilitate the Conference, which attracted over 1,000 exhibitors and 27,000 delegates from 66 countries.

Mark founded GreenBuilt to provide sustainability consulting, product line management, product development, business development, marketing, e-business, cyber security, and market transformation services to clients including EPRI, SAIC, IBM, First Solar, Energy Central, and KEMA. High profile projects included: - Developing and managing strategic alliances for EPRI with SAIC, IBM, and Energy Central - Creating the EnergyPavilion vertical portal website for energy industry professionals with SAIC - Creating new market development strategies and products for First Solar - Developing the international Process Control Systems Cyber Security Forum (PCSCS) with KEMA Consulting - Creating marketing strategy to accelerate the commercialization of a proprietary cellulosic biomass fast pyrolysis process for Dynamotive Energy Systems in the U.S.

Mark directed Commercial and Residential Product Lines for EPRI with P&L responsibility for $20M worth of research, development & deployment (RD&D), product life-cycle management, sales, marketing and business development. Mark’s global team developed, sold, and managed collaborative RD&D projects to provide electric utilities and manufacturers with conservation, market transformation, and demand-side management technologies and programs. He was EPRI’s e-Business Strategic Alliance Manager and Director of Practitioner Communities for ElectricWindow, a vertical e-business portal website for energy industry professionals, which was created through an alliance with SAIC.

Mark was hired as a Customer Service Planner to design and manage power distribution line extensions to residential and commercial clients. He quickly advanced to lead a matrixed team to develop, retain, and grow business with top industrial, healthcare, university, and electric-critical customers. Mark was selected to attend the APS Management Academy and ultimately managed many departments, including residential and commercial sales and marketing. Mark developed and managed technology-focused programs for nearly every customer sector. He created an innovative residential home builder sales program that became the standard for the company. He managed the APS Test House Program and the Commercial Power Quality Program. He developed and managed the Hospital Emergency Generator Program, the Dispatchable Emergency Generator Program, and the Predictive Maintenance Premium Reliability Services Program to retain top clients through technological innovation. He led development and implementation of demand-side management (DSM), conservation, and market transformation programs. He co-developed the initial business strategy for APS' Energy Service Company, Southwest HEC, which became APS Energy Services and was then acquired by Ameresco. Mark served as APS' representative for the Edison Electric Institute, EPRI, and several Phoenix-area Chambers of Commerce and citizen organizations. He also chaired the Board of Adjustments for the City of Peoria for a decade.

Mark directed the development of an innovative, world-class “green building” project that showcased 150 sustainable technologies and consumed 85% less energy and 60% less water than a conventional home. The ESH was developed as part of a comprehensive business development strategy to influence the Arizona residential construction market to design and construct more sustainable homes. The effort was very successful. The ESH attracted 40,000 visitors and reached 10 million Americans through free media. The project spawned the creation of a book ("The Environment Comes Home"), a 6-part PBS TV series ("This New House"), and the “Green GoodCents” Program. The ESH was the first U.S. residential project to use Life Cycle Assessment to evaluate and compare building construction systems. The project won 26 environmental awards and was recognized by the AIA Committee on the Environment as a 1998 Earth Day Top Ten Best Example of Environmentally Responsible Design.
