Chief Information OfficerIdg Communications Ltd 1994 - 1999Needham, Ma, UsOriginally joining IDG Communications as a freelance writer for PC World, and intending to pursue a career in writing, I was hired to run the PC World test centre, bitten by the technology bug again and started what has turned out to be a challenging and exciting career in the technology industry.I was originally appointed as the IT Manager, and as the team grew I was promoted to CIO. With the emergence of the internet, I took responsibility early on for the development of IDG's first websites - back in 1996. I was lucky enough to attend the first IDG Online meeting in San Francisco in 1995 which was attended by such internet luminaries as Steve Case, Jerry Yang, Jim Barksdale, and many many others, and chaired by the incomparably intelligent Bob Metcalfe, founder of 3Com and the inventor of Ethernet. It was a career defining moment that saw me take my first eager steps into a career in internet and online and ultimately to work with some of the early pioneers in internet publishing around the world. As CIO of IDG I was responsible for all areas of technology including the publishing of more than 15 websites - including (pre Google) one of New Zealand's largest search engines. I wish now we'd launched an auction site ... which was the other option at the time!During my tenure in this role, we were responsible for building a number of core systems for the organisation including a subscription system, an advertising booking and billing system and implementing key enterprise applications such as CRM and Accounting systems. We maintained a network of PCs and Macs, and in the early days - pre internet - managed one of New Zealand's most active dial-in bulletin-board systems. We launched our first website just after NBR, and before the Herald and had the dubious distinction of directing so much traffic at the NZH site on its first day that the servers failed under the load .. or so we like to think anyway. -
Systems And Applications Analyst/ProgrammerEagle Insurance Sep 1986 - Nov 1991I started at Eagle Insurance as a Computer Operator/Shift Leader, before moving into a systems programmer role as a trainee programmer.I worked as a Systems programmer, and Analyst programmer (predominantly Cobol) supporting an Australia-wide network of insurance (Fire & General) offices, and was responsible for developing and maintaining a range of insurance and finance modules, and ensuring the ongoing reliability of our mainframe (Concurrent) computer - providing after-hours support for the operations team on both system and application issues.I left the role to continue studies full-time, but continued to work for Eagle on a contract basis doing support (24x7) in both systems and applications for some time afterwards.

Infomatics was a bureau service providing television airtime booking for all of Australia's advertising agencies.I was a sole-charge computer operator, and latterly shift-leader, responsible for running the daily and nightly scheduling jobs on the IBM Mainframe that Infomatics operated.
