Working as an Instrument / Controls Engineer, I undertook the design / build / installation / commissioning and maintenance of Top and Bottom Loading Skids and Control Systems.

Working as an independent controls engineer, I undertook the design / build / installation / commissioning / project management of control systems. Generally this constituted PLC based control panels and associated field components etc. and /or CAD design and/or PLC programming

Working as an independent controls engineer (as a limited company), I have undertaken the design / build / installation / commissioning / project management of many control systems. Generally this has constituted PLC based control panels and associated field components etc. and /or CAD design and/or PLC programming I have also developed several PLC based “Products” including a Level gauging system, an Overfill protection system and an Infill metering system (please see angelcontrols.co.cc for more details). These products have had several successful installations; however, I have had difficulty with a route to market for these systems due to a lack of resources and investment.Due to variable workloads, I have required additional resources at various times. I have therefore contracted staff (directly and via agencies). Additionally, I have been required to liaise with outside contractors and third parties, main contractors and end customers.The experience has led to a thorough understanding of accounting and financial control, PAYE, VAT and employee related management. Creation of Health and Safety Policy, Method Statements, Risk Assessments etc.

Design through to commissioning of turn key Tanker loading, batching and blending systems using flowmeters, Bespoke indication and batch control instruments, PLC's and PC based SCADA systems. Design of electrical and PLC based control systems. Electrical specification compilation. Equipment selection. Contractor selection and liason / supervision for installation of above systems. Quotation and initial budgetary design of systems. Liaison with personnel from other engineering disciplines regarding design of systems etc for inclusion into other projects. Project Management over whole life cycle, from initial enquiry to handover of finished project with key responsibilities to ensure projects were completed on time and within budget. Resource management and customer liaison. Preparation of Method Statements and Risk Assessments.Day to day running of a busy flowmeter servicing department, including quotation, purchasing of spare parts etc and general day to day management of the department including resource management, scheduling etc. Design and administration of a Microsoft Access database to provide administrative processing of returned equipment from goods in through initial inspection, quotation, order placement, invoicing and despatch.Administration of the company computer network system, including repair and upgrading of PC hardware and software. Installation and administration of Novell NetWare 4.1 server. Microsoft Windows NT4 Server and Workstation, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 95, 3.1 and DOS. Microsoft Office; Providing technical support to staff.Design of publicity material and literature for both graphical design and technical content.

Working for a number of contract companies on short and medium term contracts, mainly seconded to maintenance departments for major companies (British Gas, Mobil & Rhone Poulenc). On Locations and projects such as: Gas Holder sites and Pressure reducing stations, liquefied methane storage, pumping and evaporation plant, Petroleum refinery, New Chemical plant build.Various instruments and systems including pressure switches, D.P.cells, Controllers (Pneumatic and Electronic), Pneumatic logic, H.V.A.C., Control valves / Positioners, pH measurement, smart transmitters, controllers, annunciators, recorders, cryogenic control valves, Telemetry, remote data systems, etc. Loop checking of `EX' and `Intrinsically Safe' circuits. Drafting calibration sheets. Commissioning. Supervision of Instrument and Electrical installations. Surveying of same. Programming of PLC's. Commissioning of Hydraulic systems. Various

Working on PLC controlled welding machinery. Varying work including pneumatics, toolroom work, ensuring weld strength and dimensional accuracy, fault finding under breakdown conditions, construction and repair of guards etc. Some work with industrial robots.

Year 1: Use of hand tools, milling, turning, boring, screw cutting, off hand grinding, surface grinding. Years 2,3,4: Sheet metal chassis fabrication, servicing maintenance test and calibration of multi track instrumentation tape recorders and associated peripherals, Digital blast wave recording apparatus, multi channel oscilograph event recorders, Digital sequencing units, Firing packs, High speed cine cameras and associated peripherals.
