Mark Alan Effinger - Champion of Startup Founders. One Inc. 500 success (make that two!). Raised more than $50 Million in Angel and Venture Capital for various startups. Technology product development and marketing. From advertising to laser to internet and software and biochemistry. Working with CEOs, company founders and management remains a passion. Clear grasp of the startup-to-liquidity event process, including most of the nuts and bolts of getting companies through the hurdles. Follow technology and business trends, and apply the good ones daily. The death of my former wife from a painkiller overdose put me on the path to creating high-performance experiential nutritional supplements. After 4 years of development, we released a product often considered the "Limitless NZT-48" as in the movie. We applied LEAN Startup methodologies, bootstrapped it, and have experienced 11,700% growth over the last 5 years. An ideal blend of head and heart in an important, life-enhancing technology. 2022 UPDATE: Our original vision for nootropics has just been greatly empowered: We've merged with what I believe is the most powerful, visionary, empathetic, customer-employee-product-service-soulful companies in the known universe. As a result, Nootopia.com has launched, and BiOptimizers has and continues to help us evangelize our belief in "Making a Monumental Improvement in Every Life We Touch."I want the resources to move the needle in terms of making a difference while we make healthy profits (we've got employees to feed, right?). I firmly believe we can add value both locally (in how we treat employees and our environment) and globally (how we empower people. How much we give back). All while having fun.Have you really read this far? Wow... you definitely deserve a Tito's martini. Chief Product OfficerBioptimizers Jul 2021 - PresentReno, Nevada, UsWorking with Matt Gallant (CEO), Wade Lightheart (President), Chasity Fincher (CFO - Chief Flavor Officer), Charles Buckley (aka Mr Robot) and International Burch University (Research Lab - and Brain Trust), I'm charged with ensuring we continue to innovate in every aspect of our industry.WHAT I'M WORKING ON: Our Research and Development lab is in Burlington, Iowa (affectionately labeled MoM - Masters of Molecules). Co:managing projects with Chasity (Flavorist and Project Manager), Charles (Mr Robot - Hardware Engineering), Kelly (our killer prototyper and co:creator of cool samples), Chanse (Organizer of Chaos, and Chief Ironic Shirt Wearer), Richard - (Prototyper, Facilities Manager and Wise Old Sage) and Christian - (Assistant to Mr Robot). As a serial startup entrepreneur, my typical process is: Problem=>Solution, Brand, Product Development, Launch, Market, Sell, Scale... then either replace (hire a CEO) or Sell (ExitPath).Maintaining multiple product development velocity is critical. Thankfully, my team, and our cohorts in Bosnia, do an incredible job of maintaining prototyping and experimentation, to ensure we get cool sh*t to people who matter.Ultimately, we perform 25+ product launches a year. Each of these is a fully tested solutions to biological and neurological performance issues and opportunities. So there is a ton of coordination with our C-Suite, Marketing, Design, Pre-production, Production, Advertising and Project Management. Thanks to our Robotics Lab, we also look at how we can manufacture complex products, using novel processes and technologies. We're even developing some really cool automation technologies that could very well empower every supplement manufacturer and lab in existence.More to come! One thing I love about this industry and our part in it: It's an infinite horizon. There are always more human issues to address. More problems to solve. More opportunities to explore.Being surrounded by great people rocks! -

Money WranglerExitpath Jul 2001 - PresentMicro Investing for select startups. Providing product, business strategy, and get-to-market insights and connections for consumer product companies. Strong in Product Development, PR and Advertising, intra and extra company communications and growth strategies. 27 years experience in internet and ecommerce systems from startups to mid-sized companies. Emphasis on concept to cashflow to sellout, including elements like funding and team structure. I've worked with or been business partners with Tom Holce (probably the most important Angel Investor in the Portland Metro area), Gerry Pratt (chair of the Fred Myers Memorial Trust, and early stage investor), Jacques Nichols (the Godfather of Venture Capital in the Pacific Northwest), Will Marre (co:founder and former president of Covey Leadership), Wyatt Starnes (cofounder of Eclipse Technologies, Founder of TripWire), Marsh Fisher (cofounder of Century 21) and more than 1,000 startup founders since 1986. My former life was built mostly on bootstrap launches to liquidity events within 18-36 months. Since growing a little gray hair, (some would say MOSTLY gray hair), I've been devoted to creating and working with companies with longer term vision. More sustainable business models. And developing products with my partners in Nootopia and BiOptimizers. An epiphany: Sometimes it's not about building a business: Sometimes it's about the creation of something amazing that another team is better suited to taking to market, or scaling in ways far beyond the startup team's capacity.I believe funding is an accelerant to proven ideas. If you can bootstrap your launch, you're dramatically reducing risk for everyone involved. And you're proving your model, which scores big points to partners and investors.Business is intense. But it should be fun. If it's not, finding an ExitPath that also gives you some financial runway to your next big idea (or next worthwhile employment) is an option worth exploring.Life is amazing.

Mark Effinger - Chief EvangelistIdeafisher Systems, Inc. Feb 2001 - Oct 2012Cofounded with Marsh Fisher, who himself was cofounder of Century 21 Real Estate. Marsh bequeathed the company to me after a night of drunken revelry, and 3 years of working for free to help rescue the software and brand. ThoughtOffice, ThoughtRod and a few sideline applications came out of this effort, aside from breathing new life into IdeaFisher. I acted as Chief Evangelist, developing and marketing the #1 brand in brainstorming software. Created 6 products, marketing and PR, ecommerce and web presence, advertising and strategic partnerships, training and development of next-generation technologies.

Started using it in 1998, then again from 2002 to current.I spent my time working to increase the market visibility of the platform, and shared techniques on how to optimize online PR and Online Media.Stupidly, I turned down an offer to join the executive team in 2004. Advisor/Chief EvangelistTrikke Tech, Inc. Oct 2001 - Nov 2004Buellton, Ca, UsWorked with the founding team to revamp the management structure, raise funds, evangelize the technology, test prototypes, promote at events, and develop PR and Media. Thanks to Chris McClary (my lead designer at eAgency), I was introduced to the inventor of Trikke, and the fledgling management team behind the product. A series of really interesting events help take the product from concept to a true innovation in the self-powered and eventually, electrical personal transportation and sports markets. We made the cover of Popular Science as one of the years cool innovations. Made it into a Hollywood "it" toy around the movie lots (thank you Brad Pitt and David Spade!). People Magazine spread... plenty of good media coverage.CEO and founder Gildo Bileski is still leading the charge, now moving into electric vehicles for Police and security teams. Very cool migration. -
Mark Effinger - Managing Director, Irvine IncubatorTechcoast.Com Dec 1999 - Oct 2001I worked with a handful of technologists, web developers and Angel Investors/VC's to accelerate (mostly internet) startups during the end of the first dot-com boom. When I arrived in my office, there were more than 500 business plans piled up, awaiting review. Throughout the next 9 months, we worked diligently to create an intelligent, wired workspace for startups; provide VC and Angel investor introductions,; review business plans and counsel startup companies, and engage sponsors for various projects to support the Southern California internet and technology space. From co-crafting the business plans, coaching CEO's and doing investor introductions, I handled every aspect of the TechCoast program.

Founder - Ceo - Chief EvangelistInterclient Oct 1998 - Oct 1999We developed one of the first ecommerce software applications for small business. Our software, written in Filemaker Pro with some really cool server-side javascript components (built by the brilliant Mark Middleton), and killer UI/UX developed by the equally brilliant John Harrison. Our software solved the low bandwidth issue of SaaS solutions during the early years of the internet. And we had a Freemium model (up to 12 products free, or $49/mo for 13-250 products.)I raised $350,000 from a single angel investor after burning through my own 6-figure investment. We did a number of strategic deals, including Kinko's, CameraWorld, LA2Nite.com and the Business Journals (nationwide). Our VisualCart™ technology was a powerful way to keep track of your shopping cart. And being able to build your website and shopping cart locally on your computer, then push to the web with a single click (and no arcane programming) was a major breakthrough in ecommerce for the everyman.MISTAKES: I should have raised more money from a more diverse group of investors. And I should have passed the CEO role on to our CFO (Tom Bland) who is a badass.TRIUMPHS: We built a killer brand, and eventually had great adoption. We solved the adoption issue by partnering with Camera World, and bundling our QuickyMart with digital cameras (so customers had a tool to get product images for the shopping cart).

Co-Founder, CmoAcccess Communications Oct 1996 - Feb 1999My good friend and serial entrepreneur Eric Kinney and I launched an ISP while cleaning windows and talking shop. This became what Eric dubbed "Doolittle & Billum", a fictitious entity that did little physical labor, but clipped coupons (the very definition of a successful ISP). We eventually sold it to a builder who was super excited about the whole "interwebs" thing. He bankrupted the company within a year.
-
CmoJ.Stream Mar 1997 - Oct 1998I was CMO, and raised the first $2,300,000 Angel Investment for the company. We developed incredible data compression and rendering technology that is (literally) the basis for the TV Show "Silicon Valley". I hired a former President from Intel, who was great for raising money, But really bad for running a startup. Thankfully, the first investor I engaged was John Wiley, the former founder of Supra Modems. John rescued the company, and we sold for $33,000,000 to InterTrust just as the dot-com crash happened. (In 2019, John became a customer of WebNutrients!)
-
Chief Marketing OfficerScientific Nutrition Apr 1996 - Oct 1998I heard a radio show voiced by a PhD in nutrition from U0fO. I volunteered my marketing expertise in exchange for learning nutrition. A great exchange, that eventually became WebNutrients. Dave was mentor, friend and guide into HgH precursors and nootropics. An incredible experience, and the heart of what I do today at Nootopia.com
-
Co-FounderWebnutrients Jan 1996 - Oct 1998Launched an eCommerce Brand of HgH (Human Growth Hormone) capsules. Very early into the nutritional supplement market. Thanks to the founder of Scientific Nutrition, I learned what the supplement business was about. How to design healthy nutritional supplements. And he gained ecommerce, PR and Marketing in exchange.

Co-FounderLightningrods Mar 1997 - Mar 1998Remanufacturing Mazda RX-7s and Pontiac Fiero's into electric cars. A great idea. A failed venture.
-
Co-Founder, Chief TechnologistLightningrods Mar 1997 - Nov 1997For just less than a year, I worked with an investor to create electric cars. Prompted by my former experience creating hotrod Mazda's, I tried rebuilding RX-7's and Pontiac Fiero's into high performance electric cars.Though we created one of each, we had to sell them for $10,000 each... while Kia, Hyundai and the used car industry+credit firms ate our lunch. We sold the two cars at a loss, and closed shop. (Side note: I was CMO of a software firm at the same time, and sold our software, and eventually, our company sold to Marc Tarpening and Martin Eberhard of Rocket eBook. They then founded Tesla. Coincidence?)
-
Founder And Chief Roof CleanerRain City Oct 1996 - Oct 1997After a brutal bankruptcy, I found a cassette tape of a guy who built a big business by cleaning gutters. Since I felt my business was in the gutter, I followed suit by buying a high miles truck, a ladder and a pressure washer and gutter scoops. Within months, I had developed a custom postcard marketing program that resulted in a dearth of customers. I expanded, and eventually sold the business a year later.
-
Cofounder + CmoEclipse Laser Technologies Oct 1989 - Dec 1996We quickly became the world leader in laser display technologies. By developing a low cost, high performance scanner technology, we were able to dramatically reduce the cost of graphical laser displays for advertising and entertainment.Mentored by Wyatt Starnes (my cofounder and CEO), we created one of the most innovative and high performance small technology companies in the Pacific Northwest.
-
Ceo, Founder, Chief Creative DirectorMere Image Design Group Oct 1991 - Oct 1995Ad agency focused on both the Laser Display Industry, and Fast Growth Tech businesses. I was also Co:CEO of a leading laser display firm, so this provided access to other industry leaders, and helped us all collaborate on growing the market for laser display technologies.
-
Senior Vice PresidentO'Ryan Industries Nov 1987 - Sep 1990UsMy laser technology company was acquired by O'ryan Industries, pushing us and them into hypergrowth. We became #387 on the Inc 500 list of Fast Growth Private Companies. One of my greatest goals at the time. We developed a handful of cool products. The company continues to operate as both a product development firm and creates the majority of love voltage lighting for the pool and spa industry. -
Co-FounderTechnology Incubators, Inc Nov 1986 - Nov 1987My amazing big brother Doug and I launched a company with 4 different divisions. Rocklines Clothing. LID Laser Systems. Timelines watches. Basslines subwoofers. Of course, we didn't realize (at the time) that each business was more than a fulltime job. So, fairly quickly, LID Laser Systems won out (it was the hardest and most technically challenging. Which obviously meant success!). WE sold within 11 months of incorporation. It was a win for both of us, giving Doug some cash to invest in Apple. And for me, launching my first liquidity event and startup career.
-
E5Usaf Jan 1980 - Oct 1985Randolph Afb, Tx, UsStarting as an OSI Agent, I eventually cross-trained to Jet Aircraft Technician, working in various positions (my favorite being on a team that launched Can Birds when the Inspector General would make an unannounced visit). A great experience. I saved $32,000 during my enlistment, allowing me to launch my first startup. -
Warehouse Manager & DeliveriesPhysicians Medical Labs (Pml Llc) Oct 1978 - Jan 1980My Step-Dad became the CEO of a Clinical Lab, and invited me to help launch a medical supply company within these hallowed halls. It was amazing, and helped encourage my own entrepreneurial ventures. -
Precision MachinistHanard Machine Sep 1977 - Dec 1978A startup machine shop showed me what precision, material sciences, engineering, and making big bucks was all about. Loved it. Changed my life. Thanks to Frank Kirsch and team, I learned to cut Titanium, Molybdenum, Zirconium and Halfnium at tolerances reserves for Military and Aerospace tech. Prior to leaving, we had an early CNC system. It was amazing and opened my eyes to the future of machining. I would often arrive early, and warm up the Bridgeport mills for the "old guys". They used a wood dowel against the machine head to discern how much lash, and the viscosity of the lubricant, so they could cut with better accuracy. The swing shift crew consisted of mostly returning Veterans from Vietnam. I learned a boatload from these guys as well. Mostly that war is not healthy for humans of any ilk.
